Hello everybody, AS I said in other post my degu "Yotsuba" has cataracts due to diabetes. Is the first time I have a degu with this problem and some question came up to my mind; Can she eat bread, tomato, walnut and hazelnut? If not, what can I give to her instead? I just want to take care of her the best I can, every piece of information that you give to me will be welcome. Thanks in advance

How do you know that the cataracts are caused by diabetes? There are a couple of other reasons causing cataracts and it's hard to diagnose this illness. Have you had a look here? There are some information about this topic. What are you feeding your goos normally? Tomato is okay if they don't have problems. Nuts are okay as well if you don't give too much (just as titbits but not as normal food)... and they are better in their shell so degus have to work for them. Don't give them bread!! Never!! Information about a natural degu nutrition you can find in the threads "The 50% natural nutrition project", "My Degu-Nutricion without finished products" and "Safe plants, herbs, and leaves for consumption". Have a look over there, you can't do any wrong by considering it in their nutrition.

I have a book here which says that degu can eat bread, but if you say not, I will never give them bread. About the origin of the cataracts, I have read about it and my vet have told me about it as well. More over, Yotsuba is just one year old.
Thanks a lot for your reply, I will feed better my degu from now on.

If it is cataracts caused by diabetes, then you should concentrate on high fibre food, slow release carbs, nothing sweet, and low fat. Interpretting this, I would choose veg other than tomato, carrot, peas etc, and wouldn't feed nuts.

Nuts are high in fats but once a month is ok I believe. Also choose "low oil" seeds like millet, so no sunflower.
