degu update: six almost seven days of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories but no improvement in breathing, if anything it's getting worse. stopped eating altogether now, wont even try liquidised degu pellets tonights. vets tommorrow. not looking good, think sadly i will be saying good bye. he has rapidly deterated and has now lost a large amount of body weight. not sure we can bring him back. sat in my lap snuggled up all night.

This is something I have recommended before for sick degus. It is a short duration steam bath using Olbas Oil, which is an inhalent that can help to relieve and open swollen, closed passages. You need the following,
A deep bowl A strainer that sit inside the bowl, BUT not rest all the way to the bottom A second strainer bowl A tea towel Hot tap water Oil of Olbas
Now, organize is thus, deep bowl with hot tap water, strainer suspended over NOT IN the hot water, RAT, second bowl inverted over top, tea towel draped over the whole thing. Let the rat rest in there 10 - 15 minutes, then remove. Do this twice daily if you are able to.
It is hoped that not only will this help to open passages, but that it can help to thin out the mucus and therefore help it to be passed out of the body.

So just had a phone call from the vets. he has come around form the anestetic. back teeth where slightly long but nothing to cause the extent of illness. he has fluid coming up from the throat. they found a small amount of material in throat and where hoping that it would improve his breathing but saldy since he has come round he is no better. appointment 5.15.

I am sorry to hear that. I hope he will bounce back better as more time passes from his anesthesia. My thoughts are with you and your sweet little love.

I am so very sorry!! You really tried hard, working dilgently to help him recover. Respiratory infections are notoriously difficult to treat in degus, and sometimes it seems that there is just no beating them. It is certainly no reflection on you or your loving care. I am truly sorry for your loss!
