Last night just before I went out for cocktails with my friends the degus were running around the living room and Cleo got upstairs and I saw her in the bathroom but before I got to her she jumped into a little hole I didn't even know existed in there My boyfriend cut in half and pulled up some floorboard in the bathroom and a tile off the wall - we could see her at one point but she wouldn't/couldn't jump up to get out. We haven't seen her since but we could hear her under the bedroom and so my boyfriend pulled up the carpet in the bedroom and one of the floorboards. We still can't see her. I think I heard her a bit this morning. He also pulled off the boards in the kitchen under the cupboard as well but she isn't there. We have all the holes 'open' and have put boxes/old hamster cage with some hay and food in. What else can I do? Daisy is not very happy and keeps stamping her feet at us cos we've taken her friend away I was thinking of food I could put there that may smell, hot porridge maybe? Advice welcome - thank you x

Be patient and simply await for her to come back out. The best you can do is sit around, keeping quiet and anticipate her to come out of a specific hole. Once she's out and in good clearing, block up the hole ASAP. Generally, you're playing the waiting game now and you're on the degus terms of when she wants food and water.
The sound of ripping up floorboards would probably scare her senseless.

Hi, Oh dear how awful for you all. If you can put something in the holes for her to climb up. Could you put your other degu in one of the hamster cages near the hole you think she is closest to? This may entice her out. Also ANY treats that you think she will go for. Stronger smelling is better. Will she usually come to you when out of the cage? Sorry I can't help more, please let us know when you get her back Kat X

Also when you have her back let her have a sandbath or rub her with some bedding before going back in the cage. If not her strange smell to daisy may cause fighting. Kat X

Thanks guys. There's holes in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom and I've put hot porridge in all of them with ways out. Yes she usually jumps straight out either onto us or onto the fireplace (lol). My boyfriend is in work today and I feel awful sitting here waiting for her whilst Daisy is about as upset as I am Jim I think she moved from the bathroom when we ripped those up and from the bedroom when we ripped those up! My boyfriend is not a sit and wait person though I think he's gonna take more floorboards up this evening. I think Daisy would chew the plastic cage to be honest.. but I might try it now

This might be a stupid suggestion but have you considered humane rat traps?
Theoretically it shouldn't hurt Cleo when she wanders into it and you wouldn't have to run around chasing her when she does come up.

No I hadn't thought of those. The only thing is we'd need about 7 of them for all the places she could come up from! Had Daisy in the plastic cage for a bit and it was possibly the cruellest thing I've ever done she HATED it! She was in there about an hour maybe two and now she's back in her cage, squeaking loads

I've just had Turvie jumping out of the cage when I cleaned them out today! I built a cage and mine are only interested in jumping out! This is my trick for getting them back- Like most small things they are going to feel scared in an open environment, and very wary of things going over their heads because it would be like a bird picking them up. I get a tube and place it going into a small box (something that is snug so the gap isn't big enough for them to jump out of) Put a favourite treat leading up and inside the box, I'd use oats because of the smell of them. With a lot of patience the goo should hopefully go in because they wont feel as exposed and when they are fully in the box, turn it (so the tube is upwards) and cover the entrance with your hand then quickly get her in the cage! I know it sounds a little harsh but it means you don't have to grab her and you don't get bitten and it prevents injury to the degu. Of course they will feel stressed but this will wear off once they realise they are safe. I think its important in these situations, because I'd rather the degu have a quick capture instead of the risk of getting hurt. I hope you get her back, try not to panic to much!

OMG we got her back today!! We had kind of given up hope as we had floorboards up in the both bedrooms and bathroom, and the bottom of the cupboards in the kitchen, and there was no sign of her. We hadn't heard from her since like 1am on Saturday, so I thought that was the end. Went to the Cardiff City game today, got back in the car and was trying to phone P@H to see if they had any female degus as Daisy was getting very lonely and upset.. when a text came through from my next door but one neighbour saying my neighbour in the adjoining house had found her in her kitchen cupboard!!! We are so happy and still in shock that we found her. She must have fallen down the height of a flight of stairs! She seems ok however, and has been eating and drinking quite a bit (she was gone almost 48 hours) she seems slightly quiet.. like she's in a little bit of shock.. but I'm sure she will be fine in a couple of days Thanks for all your help and advice!! x

I'm more shocked I think! As we hadn't heard her biting or running around I thought she had got stuck somewhere and would never get out!!

We had the same thing happen today with one of our goos. Edward,Squeaky and Taco were running around in the bathroom and we were watching them when all of a sudden Edward was missing. We heard him yelling thankfully my SO was awake. He some how got behind the cabinet in the bathroom. We had to pull off the bottom. We still don't know how he did it without us seeing him.
