I thought I would look at the SAB information again as it has been a while...this comment made me a little angry " There is nothing comparable in the United Kingdom today. In addition, the mix has been specifically formulated for degus, unlike any other product." This shouldn't be about just selling mixes but providing information so that people can put together their own mix for the best health of their degus -dandelion, echinacea, crimson clover, ginkgo leaves, mulberry leaves, Jerusalem artichoke, apple leaves, marigold flowers, birch leaves, mallow leaves, water cress, ribwort plantain, willow leaves, hibiscus flowers, cactus flowers, rose petals, red clover flowers, pear leaves, linden flower leaves, sunflower petals most of these ingredients can be foraged free in the UK or purchased from a number of retailers I also put bespoke mixes together for degus www.facebook.com/groups/1458498277715457/ and it was the help of the people here who pointed me in the right direction
They have obviously seen my post and have since tried to have a pop at me on their forum (that I am only questioning their attitude as I have a commercial agenda with only profit in mind!) As you guys know it was my love of degu's that got me started on the whole thing! I was warned of their comments and am now working on a bespoke mix with the person for their degus so am happy to say their comments did not have what I presume to be the desired effect. With a £60 a week rescue animal feed bill you can guess where any of my profit goes!!
If probably feels personal, but try not to take it personally, a LOT of people have had the same experience.
Hey, you should update us on your farm and rescue when you get chance, I'd love to know how it's going
Water of a ducks back......! one of the boys decided the usb cable for my camera was a tasty root!!! but a new one arrived yesterday so I will get clicking again and send some photo's when I work out how to use photobucket again! but there are some on the farms facebook page if you fancy a nosey www.facebook.com/groups/1458498277715457
sorry guys thought I had responded to this .... techno queen I am not! .....It's a public group so I didn't think you had to join to see the posts! I just copied and pasted the link and it went straight to it so maybe you do need to join the group sorry!
This has been my girls first week on a 50/50 diet and I have to say I'm really pleased. They actually get excited about dinner time now and it's so nice to hear them chirping while they are eating and foraging. They still get some nuggets/pellets because I am trying not to have to go down the vitamin d supplement route and they seem quite happy with it. One in particular already has a more shiny and softer coat (although I wonder if that is me finding results lol) but overall I am so pleased to have tried it.
Hi All, I have been using the 50/50"diets now since August. Currently I order the SAB plant and seed mix from Germany. And they get some science selective nuggets. Should I be topping this up with fresh veg? I got a bit confused after I read conflicting information on various facebook pages. Everyone here is much kinder and doesn't make it obvious if they think the question is daft so I feel safe asking here.
Fresh veg, or even dried veg isn't considered a huge part of the degu diet, leaves, stems and roots tend to make up the bulk with veg being used as a treat. Quite a few degus turn their noses up at fresh veg as well, mine certainly won't touch the stuff!

Gone but never forgotten: The odd assortment (Gotcha 13/06/2012) - Gandalf, Pippin, Venk and Smeg - sleep soundly together my dears.

Fresh veg isn't essential, but I would say it is beneficial to try to offer some fresh leaves and grass during the growing season if you can get hold of them. Fresh things have better vitamin content and good abrasive qualities on the teeth. Mine won't eat fresh veg but I use the odd piece of dried veg as treats.
There are other products at Hansemann's that look good to me and would be good for expanding the variety of plants, if you check out this thread I mention at the end a few mixes that look suitable deguworld.proboards.com/thread/19090/hansemanns-german-food-shop The flower mixes and things like dandelion roots would be good for treats.
