OK, so I'm supposed to be revising for my exam tomorrow, but here I am........ I've been feeding my little lot a fairly natural diet already, was waiting for the JR farm degu feed, so mixed together a bag of burgess garden herbs, mountain herbs and sainsburys dandelion salad. Added in a few P@H nuggets (left untouched and unloved in bottom of bowel). The monsters also get bephar Xtravital in seperate bowels (again often untouched), a mix of dandelion leaves, plantain, alfalfa and eachinnea in a third big bowel and a hay rack with marigold and dandelion hay (yes we have lot of bowels, but it saves arguments!) I've got a massive 10kg bag of the JR farm mix so rather than wasting it, I want to mix in lots of leaves etc to improve it. Does anyone know of any decent UK sites for separate ingredients? Rat rations pictures look like the leaves are chopped quite small, chincillas2shop is currently down and I don't know when she is coming back. I've posted another site in the links section, but they don't have the biggest selection (it's a pagan magic site - that is how difficult it got finding sites). I live in a city, and don't want to rely on foraging, as I can't be sure I'll always have time to stock up.

I've just mentioned Galen's Garden in the other thread. Have you found all the Zooplus products and others in this thread (sorry I haven't put back the table lines in this thread yet)http://deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15657/bought-herb-leaf-flower-mixes, Zooplus stock less now than they used to but you might find more on their international site if you are putting in a big order to still get free postage. I'll get back to you if I find or remember anything else

Yep, got the galen's garden info, thanks. I've seen And used various mixes, just thought it would be nice to get individual bits to really add in the variety. Haven't gone all the way through this thread yet, will have to sit down at the weekend and try and get my head round it all

I'm in as well! My degus are on a diet of DeguTraum mix, mallow, rose and cactusflower and a variety of seeds. I use the big bag of P@H food and oats as treats. I'm a big veggie fan as well, whenever I'm making myself a salad again, I save some cucumber and tomato for them. It took a while for them to get used to it, but they love it now. Especially the seeds haha. I just ordered Burgess Mountain Meadow Mix and Country Garden Mix to add to their food as well. When spring sets in, I'm off on adventure in our big garden, to see what we've got. So I guess I'm on the right path already EDIT: I forgot the ingredients of DeguTraum. Hold on to your horses, it's a long long list.. timothy oat peel bran whole plant corn sunflower seed extracted linseed extracted wheat bran ribwort herb rape seed extracted brewer‘s grains parsnip yarrow herb sunchoke stems lemon balm leaves nettle leaves brewer‘s yeast milk thistle herb marigold blossoms hibiscus blossoms sunchoke her amaranth camomile blossoms sweet pepper dandelion leaves peppermint leaves fennel seeds malva blossoms maca root sage leaves timothy meadow fescue meadow foxtail German ryegrass red fescue blue grass cocks- foot velvet grass annual panicle grass white ragweed vernal grass couch grass tussock grass red canary grass white clover red clover dandelion yarrow ribwort caraway cow parsley meadow sweet common hornwort bedstraw thyme-leaved speedwell bush vetch comfrey bedstrawmeadow thistle ground ivy daisies germander speedwell lady's mantle greater burnet-saxifrage narrow-leaved vetch meadow saxifrage spring cinque- foil green field-speedwell common whitlow-grass autumn dandelion red ragweed cowslip small clover

That sounds good Is that the Bunny brand food? They are one of the better commercial brands, but I only know one person who tried that food, and their degus didn't like it much, good for you if yours do though. They can share veg from other meals too - fresh or dried, the only thing mine like fresh is brocolli, but they like all kinds of dried veg. I can't wait for our hedgrows to spring into life so I can get out foraging.

That mix sounds great, but a google search only brings up german webpages. Do you have a UK supplier?

ooh thank you. Not sure where I'll put it when it arrives, so far we have a new set of drawers, boxes under the cage and half the cupboard in the dining room given over to degu supplies. My degus, spoilt? Nonsense!!!!!

Ehm, if you are talking about the Bunny food, it is not as good as it might sound. Yes, it contains a lot of things. But also things which should not be fed to degus . Besides, just try to imagine how much of every ingredient is really in one bag of 1,2 kg. It is said that there are 70 different things. If equally distributed this would mean 17g per ingredient in a bag of 1200g. As it is not equally distributed you will have to look with a magnifier to see at least half of the stuff. And imagine the size of the things. At least my degus would not even look at these very tiny pieces. I know that we encourage people to offer a good variety of things in order to provide a healthy and balanced diet. But I would always try to provide less things but these of high quality. My flowers mix contains about 10-12 different plants at the moment, my leaves mix about 6 different things and the seed mix around 15 different seeds. I can be pretty sure that my degus eat most of it.

Thank you Newtogoos. I have the JR farm degu food at the moment, I've mixed in several of the naturals leaf mixes with it, and now Chinicillas2shop is up and running again I plan on getting some flowers to liven up the mix. It's pretty good, but does have alot of seeds and grains in, so I'm trying to make it more of leafy mix. Since I've been doing that, I have noticed that they aren't so interested in their hay.

I don't know if anyone has already put this site up on here or not, so i thought i would mention it. www.ratrations.com/ I ordered some things from here on saturday night after seening a FB post about it, and they arrived today (tuesday afternoon) which i thought was really fast, considering it wasn't processed till monday morning! The whole box only cost me £12.66 (£6.66 for products and £6.00 for delivery) which I thought was pretty good value (and the £6.00 delivery for a 2.2kg parcel with their courier was about half the price of if they had sent it with royal mail, and probably arrived much faster than if with royal mail tbh ) My order consisted of : Plantain - Dried Plant 150g Degu Treat & Plant Mix 100g Rice - Puffed 100g Rose Petals 10g Maize - Flaked 500g Peas - Flaked 250g Oats - Whole 500g Locust Bean pieces (Carob) 250g Degu Seed Mix 100g There is a lot of other good stuff available too, and all at good prices. Mostly aimed at rats (as the name suggests) but they have things for a wide range of other pets too (even a little section on degus!) These were just a few things that I either wanted to try them out on or things that I know they like and wanted to have more of to use as treats, rather than digging through their food mix for them

Thanks Shads, yes we know about Ratrations, but I haven't placed an order myself for a while. You've ordered some really good things and a couple of not so healthy things, I wouldn't advise the locust beans, they are high in sugar and the maize & rice are kind of junk food and the oats should be small quantity treats (see nutrition charts for more info). Most of the other stuff is excellent though We highly recommend the degu seed mix, and the flowers and plants are fantastic. I'd love to see a closer pic of the plantain and the 'degu treat and plant mix', what is in that? Also for next time, Anita from the forum has just started supplying them with a flower mix and a plant mix that are great too.

The Locust beans are for occasional treats, as they love them, but i know they shouldn't have too much of them, I think that bag (smallest they sell) will probably last for a year or more, unless i get another pet that can eat it more freely that is. The rice again was to try out as a treat, as id seen it mentioned by someone that they give theirs puffed rice as a treat, but i didnt want to just go and get rice crispys or something similar and i was pretty sure they would have a tonne of extra sugar in them. But having tried one of the rice puffs myself, they taste kinda like sugar puffs, but not quite as sweet but i could see myself eating more of that pack than i give to the degus and again the oats were to try as a treat, with the idea that the bag would last a few years (I have bought tupper ware boxes for all to keep them fresh and dry to try and keep them good for as long as possible) I have taken a better picture of the plantain for you and a closer look at the Degu treat & plant mix It contains equal weights of: Ajwan Carrot Celery Chicory Clover Gold of Pleasure Lettuce Linseed Niger Rapeseed

Thanks, the plantain looks good, nice big pieces, and the seed mix is great too, a nice add on to the main degu seed mix they do.

The bottom of the bag of plantain is a lot of small bits/dust, but there are a lot of the nice sized large bits also. I have tried the boys with it, they will eat it, but there not mad for it, so if they suspect that I have something tastier there they will just throw it on the floor and look expectantly at me!
I have tried both the seed mix out with them not too. Lister really likes the treat and plant mix, but Kryten is not bothered about it. They both seem to like the Degu seed mix, they favor the coriander seeds, which is one of the main components of the mix, but i think they ate some of the other seeds from the mix too.

Been thinking about trying out a more natural food diet for my guys and giving them less pre made/pellet foods. I know they need some vitamins supplemented when doing this, the main ones often being Calcium and VitD3, so was wondering if this would be something suitable to give them for supplementing this? www.ratrations.com/calcivet-powder-dr-squiggles-p-474.html

Mine get it occasionally as I have it in for the young and the old ratfolk. But I very much just occasionally wave it at them, rather than anything more precise. It's a very fine powder, so sticks just fine to rinsed leaves/ veggies.

That one is only suitable for 'casual' supplementing as the calcium and Vit D are all in together so you can't give the amount you want of each one.
