Rosie has been on injectible baytril since last Thurs. She seemed better yesterday, even running in her wheel, but tonight, she is so weak, her breathing is awful and I believe she will pass sometime tonight. I am heartbroken. I will have a necropsy done to try to find out what happened to my poor little girl. She is such a sweetheart and does not deserve this. She is only 3 1/2 yrs old. It has to be cancer (or a heart issue) but she is drowning, basically. Her lungs have filled up with fluid and nothing has worked to help her. There are no vets I can get to to even help her right now. God, I hate this! Please say a prayer for my sweet little Rosie.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Rosie. Please let us know how the night goes, and what you learn from the necropsy. I am so sorry, hon!

Well, I don't know how, but she is STILL with us. Still the same. Today is one week on meds, so will call vet. I know this could also be viral pneumonia, and not much can be done with that, just has to fight through it, if she can. She won't each much, and that is the problem. But if I force feed her critical care, I worry she will die from not being able to breath and panicking. She is in bad shape. I worry even putting her under will kill her, but then if she isn't better, don't think I have much choice. I hate this! Thank you.

Sorry to read such sad things about your degu. But don't give up!! Which meds are you supplying currently? How much is the little lady eating per day? There is a terrible vicious circle between not eating, getting worse etc. If she is not eating enough, she might develop intestinal problems by producing gases. These can be dangerous for the lady and also produce a sense of satiety. Here in Germany we always recommend to supply simethicone (there is an article in wikipedia if you want to know what's about). It is very mild and can be used for degus. It's used to destroy gas bubbles. There isn't any risk at all so I think you could just ask for it in a drugstore (or whereever in the USA you can buy medicine).
Good luck!!

Thank you, I do know (and have used) simethicone drops. Sadly, at 7:56 am this morning, Rosie passed while I held her. Necropsy was strange, in that she had no fluid in abdomen or chest, lungs looked healthy. She did have a 0.5 cm dark spot on her left ventrical and vet said he suspected mycardial infarction and subsequent cardiac arrest. Intestines were filled with gas. Oral exam showed nothing out of the ordinary. This is all very strange, as it started with her sneezing, then her left lung was 'congested', week of meds, got worse, upon exam both lungs were congested, right lung was worse, and they were 'crackling'. Started injectible baytril, although sneezing did decrease, she got weaker. (She was not eating much, no matter what I tried and I could not force feed her, as her breathing was so bad.) I wonder if the pneumonia cleared up, hence the lungs looking healthy, not having fluid but with her not eating, somehow put stress on her heart? I am still not sure what caused the sneezing/breathing issues, based on this (unless she had an underlying heart condition, which initially was mentioned. But would that cause sneezing? I could see breathing issues, but not the sneezing.)
