Thanks for asking,he's doing great! He's back into being good old Moki. My family, friends and I are so happy to see him that way. He was always a bit skinny, since he was a baby, and hes back to that,no bloated tummy or anything. He's driving his wheel, being mad and sqeeky when I tease him by trying to take his food away,he's very social and full of energy. He's breathing normal, through his nose without noises. He destroyed three hammock I made for him,so I had to sew new one. lol. He likes to demolish things. He's into being himself. I love it.

Yay! A happy ending for Moki, that is such a relief that he's doing good. Especially as he is one cute degu. I love the photo of you tickling him.

Maybe there's not a happy ending after all. Moki won't eat since yesterday,I tried to give him every single food he likes, but nothing. He just takes it and he just keep carrying it around in his mouth. Other than that,he spent almost whole day yesterday lying on my legs. He's totally out of energy and probably starving. He is with me now,he stretched his body like hes very comfy and just lying here with half closed eyes. As much as I love it,I hate it too, cause I know he's not well.
As for the pet shop,I went there few days ago to get that baby goo and he wasn't there. They told me they will maybe get new degus around friday,so we'll see how that will go.

It's a real roller coaster with Moki. However bad your vets are, I think you should give it another go. First of all, it's important to keep his strength up and they should be able to help him with this. They could also take an Xray of his head. It should not be difficult to determine whether he has any problems with his teeth. My offer to speak to a specialist vet still stands, but we would need to be able to get to a diagnosis on distance.

Well,as I mentioned before, last time I was there not a single person wanted to check Moki at all. I can try,but I can't see how anything will be different this time. Both times they totally blew us off, except the first time when they gave us Baytril cause I asked for it and nurse lied to that doctor that I got told about it from some other vet, cause doctor didn't want to give it at first (so much drama over a medicine I can even buy online...lol)
And yes indeed, its a roller coaster. I somehow managed to get Moki to drink vitamin drops with water and hes a bit better,he is actually eating a carrot now. Yay. I forgot to mention he's breathing fully through his nose, and even until yesterday he was combining nose and mouth breathing. I would love specialist help, and I really do appreciate it,but even if that works out and specialist gives an opinion,if Moki needs a surgery or something like that,I cant travel to England with him,and here no one does surgeries. Anyhow,I will try my best to ask vets one more time to help.

I think it's worth perservering with the vets as unfortunately Moki will need vet help, there is only so much you can do. Go and bully the vets! At the end of the day they can't leave an injured animal alone, isn't it like against their ethical code or something like that.
Also try and feed him mushy foods. So mix oats with water, or if you can find sugar free peanut butter. That way at least Moki will be able to get some food into him to keep his energy up if it is his teeth that is bothering him. Does he eat hay? As that will keep his teeth trimmed down at the same time. It's going to be about giving him a balance between getting energy into him and getting him to keep his teeth worn down.
Apparently guinea pigs are the closest relations to degus in terms of their anatomy, however I don't know how similar they are in the teeth growing department, and if guinea pigs have the same issues with teeth and growths at the root of the tooth (assuming this is the issue). At least Moki is breathing through his nose which hopefully means he will not get the bloated tummy issue.

I agree with everything malteser said. Peanut butter is a great idea, but if you can't find some without added sugar in the shops, I wouldn't hesitate – for a very limited period of time until he is eating normally – to give him the one with a bit more sugar in it.

OUCH! That sounds like a very expensive proposition, Smux.
Enadriel, if you have a pestle and mortar, you can simply crush straight peanuts, no need to add any additional fats to the mixture, as they have more than enough of their own oil to make them into a "butter" type consistency. I think you could also consider moistening with water, the food you regularly use for Moki. Then blending it with a bit of crushed peanuts/peanut butter. You may need to experiement a bit with the amount of water needed for this mixture to entice his appetite, and make it easy for him to eat.
I hope any of these things will work well for Moki, and you will see him improve again! Please let us know.

never understood quarantine rules, if i go to france on the eurostar with a dog in the car for the weekend does it need to be quarantined or is it only if flying? if so isnt that a little weird consider the dog "could" walk from one country to another anyhow in europe...

w8152, I was just reading about this not long ago, but I can't find the link to the Defra site on animals and quarantine. However, summed up, if you are bringing in an animal from the EU they do not require quarantine as long as they have the necessary paperwork. For rodents, no paperwork is needed. Outside of the EU and there is a 6month quarantine for animals coming into UK. All EU countries have the same rules generally, and non-EU countries have their own rules but they all are much the same. So if you are going with a dog to Europe by car or boat it still needs all the paperwork but no quarantine. smux - there's no butter in peanut butter ;D

I made him peanut butter,he didnt wanna eat it so I had to put the food into his mouth which he was fine with cause every time food would slip,he would help himself to get it into his mouth, obviously he was hungry and he liked it. That was at 4:30 am (yes,I am not sleeping at all since he's in this state). I gave him water with vitamins too. I tryed to repeat this in the morning, made few mixes of food, some degu thingies, peanut butter....He would just spit everything out of his mouth,he doesn't want to eat. He did drink with my help thou. He is very weak and very skinny. I don't know how to explain this on proper english, but I will try. I don't think his tummy was swallen cause of the air,I think its more likely to be the inside organs like liver or something. I don't really know how to say this in a nice/unrude language,so forgive me for that. Anyhow, yesteday night his poo was hanging ,and I wanted to clean it up. When I pulled it I actually pulled around 10cm of poo with slimy things. I never saw anything like that,it was really disgusting.
About the vets, they don't want to be responsable, cause they don't know about degus. I am not considering to go to England with Moki, cause I can't afford that. We are not talking about vet price, but plane, hotel, food, etc. And I am only a student. I am not sure if I should put Moki to sleep or leave him be. He doesn't seem like he's in pain, but that doesn't have to mean that he isnt. He looks tired and sleepy ,and hes cuddleing and sleeping on me or his hammock whole day. We had a 4 gorgeous years together and he is the best pet I have ever had, but I know he can't live forever. I am wishing for that „Moki rollercoaster“ thou.

could it be that he ate something he shouldnt and it blocked his digestive system? you may have help clear that now and it could be he felt bloated because of that blockage. Anyone else see this as potentially a corner turned?
I wish you both the best.

I am so very sorry to read this. I am going through something similiar with my goo, Rosie. Fluids can build up from organ shutdown, and could be the reason he does not want to eat (renal failure). Do you have a juicer? Can you juice some veggies and see if he will take the juice? Sending tons of prayers for you and your little one.

never understood quarantine rules, if i go to france on the eurostar with a dog in the car for the weekend does it need to be quarantined or is it only if flying? if so isnt that a little weird consider the dog "could" walk from one country to another anyhow in europe... i think its because of rabies. Rabies are spread worldwide but not in uk, japan, australia and some other countries, because it's island and infected animals on land can't reach island n foot and spread the illness. But those animals could be bring by people in planes etc. Infected animal might not show any signs of illness for up to 6 months, that's why the guarantine is 6 months before they allowed to uk. Also if they vaccinated and 6 months after there's no sign of rabies, vet will get them paperwork they safe and they don't have to be in guarantine at all after arriving to uk. Well, i meant mostly the dogs. No idea how it goes for other animal arriving to UK.
