Das sieht doch schon viel besser aus . There will still be some spots you need to protect. You can use a hard metal for this. Alternatively, I have used planks of cheap kiln dried timber from B&Q which I have just screwed on top the vulnerable surface. I reckon I will have to replace it every six month but it's cheaper than wooden toys and they just love to tuck in.

I think that hutch looks amazing! There is one addition I would put in though, the reason being, degus LOVE to kick substrate and poo around. If you were able to to put edges on the edges . . . now doesn't that sound confusing. Hmmm . . . like a 3-4 inch lip on your outward facing cage edges, it would hold your substrate in and prevent your goos from making a massive mess of your floors. Additionally, IF you attached them using something like a piano hinge and slide bolts to secure them in place, all you would have to do is undo the slide bolt and let the lip drop down so that you could then easily sweep out the dirty substrate every time you clean out your cage. An alternative, if you don't want to use a piano hinge and would rather a permanent lip, I find that using my dust pan (goes with my broom for sweeping the floor) works great to scoop it all out, and much faster than just my hands.

Looks good Since they seem to make the hutches themselves, it's probably worth speaking to them to check that the timber is untreated and you might as well tell them you don't need any felt on the roof, they might even attach the shelf edging for you.

Thanks for all the replies ! I've already messaged them with some alterations Considering the 5ft x 2ft triple hutch now LOL What's the biggest hutch I can fit in my hallway ?! LOL The lip is a very good idea ! And also adding wood panels to the inside should they not be completely flat ! Prob much quicker than fitting wire mesh and easier on the eye as well They have an indoor and an outdoor option -I'm guessing the indoor hutch doesn't have felt on the roof. One thing I was wondering about though -lighting ?! I don't think I'd fit sunken spotlights or anything fancy like that -would some clip-on lights on the outside of the frame work ? Getting all excited now

Ikea has LED light strips that are very low profile and you could probably thread them through to light a portion of each level . . . I have some in my kitchen above my counter tops, and I love them. Maybe give them a look?
