I'm a little unsure of Elijah's behaviour lately, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas. Firstly, I'll start by saying I've checked all of the babies myself and they are all definately MALE! He's wagging his tail a lot from side to side. He's not beating it of the floor and it seems playful. I am right in thinking this is excitement? He also is making what appears to be the 'mating bark'. As I said, I've checked all of the babies and they're all male, so is there any chance Elijah could just be confused? He had been on his own for about a year before last week and has been a little over the top with humping and 'seeing to himself' since the babies moved in with him. I'm fairly certain it's the mating bark as when I pick him up or stroke him, he just carries on making the same noise. It's really confusing. Help, lol.

hi amie.. i am at the same moment wondering whats up with chocs as he has been doing the "mating bark" now since yesterday.. he barked for about an hour yesterday after having a hump...lol then he settled down but.......today he is driving me crazy, he hasnt stopped barking since 9am "seriously!" he doesnt even stop to drink, eat etc etc... he seems to be doing the same as elijah, barking, humping then checking his bits??? now i do know thats its slightly different as willow is a girl but it seems that we are both experiencing the same from our goos, im also confused so cant help, are you 100% sure they are all male..............lol ok, stupid question, i know you know your stuff...!!! i really dont know amie but i too would like some help in understanding, maybe my chocs has mated, maybe this is the reason but surely the mating bark doesnt last THIS long??? as for elijah, maybe he is just over excited, bless him...lol

They're all male! lol. That's why I'm confused! As for Chocs, he's living with a girl. It doesn't surprise me that he's constantly humping and doing the mating bark Just look at human men for a second. When they're in the company of a lady (especially for the first time, like Chocs).... do they stop to drink, or do ANYTHING ELSE? lol.

Degus have been known to bark following male on male humping, so this isn't very unusual. I suspect that he is rather excited, a year is a long time to be alone, the poor little guy, and he is probably near bursting with a combination of frustration and sheer joy. I am hoping that it is just a phase that is part of his adjusting to having cage mates again, and will pass in a few days. I hope you can keep your sanity that long! You too, Nuttz!

Lol I certainly do! Ha ha! I think it's normal behaviour, Ernie was only alone for a little while (roughly a week) before he had some (boy) babies in with him and he did the same, got really excited and wouldn't shut up, or stop humping and seeing to himself, he's still at it now!
And I can vouch for the babies being boys, I honestly checked about a zillion times until there was no doubt in my mind before I let them go.

I know! I've checked them too! lol. Finley has a slightly smaller gap, but still has a BIG gap. It makes sense that his gap would be the smallest as he's the smallest male. He's tiny! lol.

yep, I personally think it's easier to sex a baby rather than an adult, the gap looks more pronounced to me, and I find it asier to gently push back (never grab hold) the base of the tail, rather than flip them over, because you can really see the line of skin then that the girls don't have.

our Willow wags her tail when Pip is winding her up but thats when there is food about lol but thats the only time she does it.
Buffy on the other hand does squeek for about half an hour but its normally when she gets spooked, we have checked that she is female she just likes to meep for attention lol
