Hey all, this morning one of my 3 degus starting squeeking quite frequently. throughout the day I have seen him making various squeeking noises but mainly these have been high-pitched (of various tones, changing key and tempo) and completely random lasting slightly longer than the normal odd squeek they let out. He seems quite healthy, been on his wheel for the majority of the day as usual, eating well and just as inquisitive as usual, whilst hes been squeeking today, for the higher pitched clusters he has been opening his mouth as though yawning (although this is probably just how he does it lol) seems to be still fairly sociable, I have also noticed that when I open the cage and bond with him he stops squeeking, whether this is just as hes concentrating on me or not i dont know lol. He has two brothers and is in a good sized cage with them. I was basically wondering whether anyone else has this as the norm? or if anyone wants to cast their opinion please go ahead, wondering whether hes doing it for social reasons? Anyhows, let me know what you think xx

I think it sounds perfectly normal, degus do make alot of different squeeking sounds and some are more vocal than others. Although if you could post a sound clip or video of the noise we would be able to make sure that the noises are indeed normal.

Has he been spending any time with the other two? Grooming, degu pile, anything? It definitely sounds like he is rather upset about something . . . just figuring out the what is the trouble. Have you looked him over to see if there are any visible troubles?

hey, he has still been acting normal and playing with his brothers but its just the noise! when he makes the noise he is normally on his own!! ive looked him over and cant seem to find anything wrong with him! ive removed a bridge that i put in there a few days ago and he hasnt made the noise again yet so hopefully he just didnt want that in the cage! x

i put a new one in there a couple of days ago but he seemed fine with that and then i put the old one back in aswell but in a different place to try and stop them eating the new one (which didnt work) It was the old 1 i took out and now he seems fine! im guessing he didnt like where i put it and he couldnt move it around as it was a bridge that attaches to the cage hopefully he will be fine now

LOL!!!! Oh that is just WAY too FUNNY! Talk about having an opinion! Maybe he has designs on being an interior decorator and you had committed a MAJOR decorating sin. It seems that he was certain that all his noise would get your attention and cause the eventual correction that he desired. I'm amazed how well you did in figuring it out, really. I mean . . . I'm almost sure it wouldn't have occured to me to remove the new thing . . . I think? I've never had such a vocal opionion on any of the things I've put in the cage. LOL!! I get quite a kick out of this!

haha yeah i know bless him! atleast i know for the future to ask his opinion before placing anything in the cage! he hasnt made that noise all day so it had to of been the bridge! i knew if he was unhappy about something in the cage that he had to be something ive moved or put in there recently and then if removing that didnt work then i would of tried putting him in another cage! its just lucky that my 1st guess worked

Does that mean I have to go out and find a fountain to put in the cage?

Have you found out why he's doing that yet? I can't be bothered to read all the comments lol ^^; :/ Not sure what it is, but my Degu does this sometimes when a car drives past outside.

yeah.. he was doing it as one of his bridges was in the wrong place and he couldnt move it as it was attached to the cage! lol

hahah awesome stuffs, my eldest degu made a similar sound but more regular thought initially it was a warning sound but it scared the babies into hiding, the only thing i could put it down to was a change in temp it was distinctly cooler on the days that it happened, looks like winter will be fun lol
glad the feng shui is sorted ^_^
