Hi there! Just over 2 months ago i rehomed a chin from a breeder who also took in abandoned chins. I love the little guy to bits, but he is not very tame. I think he is about 3 years old. I don't think he got much attention from his first home, and is not used to being handled. His confidence has definitley grown, as he used to just hide when i let him out, but he now runs around causing as much devastation as possible! However, when i try to pick him up he runs around his cage and does not like me getting hold of him, and wriggles when i do. It is impossible to catch him when he is out and so i just have to chase him back into his cage Can anyone give me any advice how to get him used to be picked up? i try to handle him once a day at least before he goes exploring. Also, i have purchased a spinning saucer for him, however he really has no idea that he has to run in it! Any ideas on how to show him or introduce it to him? Thank you in advance, Rachael xx

Sorry I don't know anything about chins to help you with your other questions, but I got my degus going on a flying saucer-type running disc by offering them a treat in such a position that by trying to reach the treat they would set the disc in motion. They are loving it now

I dont know many chins that like to be held! I still have to chase mine round the cage to get them out after a few yrs. I did find it easier to handle my 1st chin before i introduced him to a cage mate - I guess there was more 1 on 1 time together. Id advise you just sit in front of the cage with your hand inside..perhaps with some treats on it to start with n just let him get used to ur smell. If he's anything like mine he will be happy to climb all over you (until you try to pick them up!!). Id start off by keeping his exercise in a small room - perhaps the bathroom (WITH THE TOILET SEAT DOWN!!!) If I sit on the floor with them they will climb on top of me (i think theres a pic of Mowgli on my shoulder somewhere on here!). Another idea to get him back into his cage is to put a sandbath down on the carpet - he may jump into it and so u can carry him to the cage in that. On the whole though Ive found chins to be quite independant - a bit like cats - they are happy to leap all over you - but its got to be on their own terms. I have 2 friends with chins - between us we have 8 and not one of them likes to be held. Saying that though - perhaps thats because they do have chin companions and so dont have as much human contact.

your chin may never let you pick it up i have one just like yours what sex is it btw ? all i can say is too spend more time with it will take a while for it too except you if its a few years old you may find if you lie on the floor when its out and stay quite still it will run up too you and jump on you this is a good way let him come too you and be boss ;P( may not do this straight away). also mate i have had 2 chins for a year and a half and nothing i do got them too run in there wheel my degus did straight away so dnt get your hopes up on that too
