LOL they love it - little trots and grunts I do think they need a diet though since coming to us they are really big. Can anyone recommend a good diet for degu's - weight loss programme?? I get the impression they didn't get much exercise before.

I wouldn't feed them any less, as i'm sure you have them on a sensible amount already, I think the key is just letting them get more exercise.

Lots of exercise, as mentioned, plus regular greens and plenty of hay. If you treat them, switch to the low-fat alternatives like shredded wheat, ryvita and porridge oats (make sure all of these are plain and sugar/salt free, or as salt-free as possible) with the rare peanut or peanut butter (there are sugar-free ones out there that contain 100% proper ingredients...most supermarkets have them) on a stick (I use spaghetti, and break a bit of about an inch or so, and put a blob of it on the end...they eat it like a lolly, it's cute to watch them holding the stick while enjoying the peanut butter) I love the peanut butter suggestion! I will be on the hunt for that next time i'm shopping! Thank you Yeah i'm working on the exercise thing!

I have to say, the exercise thing isnt really that difficult lol, I bought a flying saucer and my Ernie only stops running on it to eat, drink and sleep. They also LOVE their exercise balls! They're very nervous out in the open without being in them, but once theyre inside, they pelt around the place at 100 mph! I got a couple from P@H, they're roughly football sized so plenty big enough, but I would recommend getting them from somewhere else if you can find them big enough because theyre kind of opaque rather than transparrent and I always wonder if they can see very well through it since they rn into things, but it might just be that they were going too fast to stop the ball in time lol.

Hey Phil, Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I've got a huge running ball big enough for 2 goo's at a time which is great! It's a rat and chinchilla one - so plenty big enough I've got a huge flying saucer for my 2 youngest and they are the same; they only stop for food and drink haha! I've just ordered another one for Grunters and trots so we shall see if they like it as much - It's due to arrive on Tuesday!

Good idea, im sure the extra weight will drop off in no time! sounds like theyd enjoy the chance to stretch their legs! and ROTFL do they actually use one ball at the same time? I can't ever imagine 2 degus cooperating on which way to go? lol. Ive seen chinchilla ones b4! arent they those massive ones that look like beach balls?

Yeah haha they are about the size of a beach ball - the goo's absolutely love it!! They both trot on in when they see it open against their cage! I was suprised too when they both go the right way and cooperate, It's brill. Good to get their scents all over it too ready for the next introduction in a week or 2!
