One of my guys has one long nail on his back foot. All the others are fine. It doesn't seem to be bothering him but having kept an eye on it, it isn't getting any shorter and I think if it is allowed to grow it will start to cause him problems.
Should I trim this - anyone any experience of doing this? Anyone recommend some clippers. I know Pets at Home sell some that have a good rating but that is largely from guinea pig owners. I could take him to the vet of course but if I can do it at home I think it could be less stressful for him.

You know . . . I have no idea what the "quick" of a degus nail is like, and would be very nervous of causing a bleed from cutting too deeply. If they are like dog toe nails, the quick will be growing longer with the nail itself, and there may be no way of knowing how long it is. I think I would try to use a nail file first and rub it down, before clipping it.

Thanks. Yes I'm a bit apprehensive of over-trimming. I'll try the filing first - if the little chap will tolerate me!

Just to update. I tried the filing but without much success. Fortunatley a friend who is used to handling animals of all sorts at a wildlife centre offered to trim the nail. His experience showed - he easily got him into a hold without any wriggling and cut the nail. All over in next to no time - much less stressful than a visit to the vet. Still don't think I'd want to do it myself.

I guess it pays to have a friend who works in a wildlife centre, i'm glad the nail has been sorted out now

Ha ha how lucky are you! I'll just get my wildlife centre friend in to clip this! lol. I bet you don't have to think very hard about who to entrust your degus with when you go on your hols lol

WHEW! That's a relief!! So glad it is done with, hopefully never to grow to such lengths again. I have to agree with you, I would not feel good about doing it myself either. I've had one too many bloody results when trying to trim my dogs nails . . . MASSIVE GRIMACE . . . and I shy away from trimming nails big time.
