They are not full levels but pets at home sell big blocks that you can screw on to the side of the cage. They also get smaller perches (a bit like but not what parrots get). My family are hopeless at DIY and although we all love them- except from my mum lol- they live in the study and we don't have the space to do a DIY cage . We are possibly thinking of adding our old cage too it but we think that so long as we give them lots to do and let them play with us lots everyday then they are certainly fine for now. Anyway, the cage seems like luxury to them as the cage they were given to us in (for free when we adopted them) was only just big enough for two goos!
Have you considered buying something like an Aventura or Liberta, or the XL rat royale? It would be a lot easier to make that more appropriate for three degus, as John hopewell cages are simply too small. Degus need full levels as they're ground squirrels, not tree squirrels and so don't climb well, but need wide open spaces to run in! I think probably after all the costs of DIY to make your current cage big enough for three, it would be more cost effective to buy an appropriate cage if you get me? My first cage was 3 full levels for my two sisters, but they were too short to fit the appropriate sized wheel in, a tictac wheel, so we built an extension to give them an additional 2 levels, one being very large in height to fit a tic tac and another half level. But it cost us like £100! We may as well have bought another cage and joined the two together to make a palace of 7 full levels spread over two cages for the sisters lol!

Emily! Oopsie! I put the wrong cage down I can't find it on the website so I've just taken this photo. I'm too lazy to go get a measuring tape and get the dimensions but Jam is sitting by the wheel so you can sort of get an idea from how big he is. My bad! I agree that the cage I linked is wayyyy too small and tall! Also, can't upload a full pic so here is the top half...

Ok so the pictures won't show but I have worked out the cubic mass and it is 375000cm. Also the dimensions are approx: width: 50cm length: 100cm height: 75cm. Is this suitable for three adult degus?! I hope so!

We don't go on cubic mass.
We go on full levels.
So for 3 adult degus you need a cage the size of 100x50cm but for three degus you'd be wanting 4 full levels of that size to be comfortable, plus your hanging toys and jumps and ledges.
That's why we recommend a Liberta or Aventura, rat royals XL as a cage, because it's very easy to modify it to have the 4 full levels and still have space for a proper sized wheel, lots of toys, jumps, ledges, hammocks etc x

Ah I see! I wish I'd been involved in the buying of this cage but it probs wouldn't have helped as I was only 10 lol. If I asked my dad for a new cage he would kill me as we only got this one about a year ago. I didn't know we were getting it dad surprised me with it but if I'd known all this I would've definitely have gone for one of those cages! They look like degu paradise! Especially the ratty one! I might ask for an extension cage for Christmas because that seems like a good way of adding a new level. I've put all their blocks together; they love it!

Erin, are you able to post a photo of your cage? We might be able to give you quick tips to give your furries more room?

If anyone notices their photos or posts have gone, it's because your links were broken and I couldn't find the original picture to re-host it, like I have rehosted all of the photobucket ones. Feel free to re-upload using something other than photobucket.

It looks great - well done!
Since keeping goos, I have been seriously considering ditching my TV licence!

Can't beat watching a little domestic between a male and female pair, it's like having big brother live in your degu room!

Yeah, my boys like to get on their back legs and have a good ol drink, just wondering how they get on with balancing on angled wire ladders

It's awesome !!! Can they get to their water bottles ok though? Yeah, they either sit on the ladders or reach up from the gap between the bars and ladder. I'm looking to buy glass bottles and some bottle holders.

Ah! So the bottles are plastic and it is your hope they will not chew them because of how you have them placed?

Ah! So the bottles are plastic and it is your hope they will not chew them because of how you have them placed? They are above the ladders since that is currently the easiest place for them to drink from since the spout isn't quote long enough to reach over the wooden splash guards. I have a glass Living World bottle that I will use once I find a decent water bottle holder for use inside the cage.
