Uploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.usI apreciate they arent the best pictures, but thought would get some on for now, will get some more on when more toys and things are added for them, and as I say it was done quickly as an emergency cage lol! I would like to add more levels, but like I say as this is only an emergency cage, they wont be in this for long, However the dimention calculator does say its fine for 2-6 i would like something much bigger for them with capacity for more shelves :-)

It looks great! It really does! I can't tell you how tempting it is to me to try my hand at building a new degu cage. I just don't think my hubby would go for it. But . . . OH!! How I would love to make something with more running room for them!

Almost giddy!!! I talked to my hubby about maybe building a new cage for the goos and . . . once I get the rest of the house done . . . painting the kitchen cabinets . . . I might be able to make one!! So long as I do with with a girlfriend of mine and he doesn't have to do it. LOL! I am thinking I want it long, so looking at measurements of 152 cm length, 51 cm width, and 114-127 ish cm height. It would give them SO much more space to run and I would feel less badly about them having less floor time than they used to always get. (The new floors, skirting, and doors . . . hubby NOT wanting anything chewed quite understandably.) Anyway, I'm thinking it will be a little while, June/July before I can do this, but WOO HOO!! Nightwishraven, you're dangerous!

@ DegutasticJen The cage looks great ! Nice and spacious, especially considering this is an emergency cage. I bet the degus love it Anxious to see their permanent cage ! Thanks for posting those photos...hopefully it will help readers see that this project is doable. Keep us updated ! @ deguconvert I am so glad for you ! Hopefully it will work out. I am moving around the first of July, but once I settle in my new place I will be working on a project to build a new cage for the degus. I would like to continue my search to find adoptable degus in this province, but I cannot do so until I can provide my degus with a bigger enclosure. If this works out we will be building our cages at approximatly the same time...we might be able to exchange notes

I do the exact same thing. Two will gladly let me do it, and the other backs away with a paw in the air as if to say, "With breath like that?? Are you kidding?!" LOL!

I have been getting some good feedback from other forums as well. I just though I should post a few photos of the cages others have built. One lady was keeping her degus is a metal/wire cage. She was looking for something new and big...before I could reply, she was told by another member to read the website on How to build a degu cage ! She was so surprised and I think she really enjoyed it. So she kept the metal cage and built a wooden cage with the materials she already had. Obviously, the result was really good and the degus have lots more running space. Here are some of the pics she posted. She did not have the wood and glass to create a big wooden cage, so she has the clever idea of building a smaller cage and using the mesh top as an extension. These degus now enjoy a much larger home and have lots more opportunity to dig, climb and run.

Not happy about the mesh part of that cage having mesh floors!
The rest of the cage looks nice though :-)

Here is a cage that was built by a lady in Canada several weeks ago. She now has a little goo family and they are having lots of fun living in there...more space and easier to clean and maintain Here is another cage I would like to show. My good friend, Lennart gave me permission to use a photo of his cage in the website. So a big thanks to him for that. Lennart started out with two females, but soon found out one of them had been impregnated by a male at the pet shop. So when the degu had her pups, he kept them for a few weeks and got them sexed. He gave away the single male and kept the females. Now he has a small clan At first, he really liked the metal cages, but after a while I think he saw how hard it was to maintain and clean. Most people who are new to owning degus think that keeping a metal cage clean isnt a problem...but after a few months, they get the idea of how much energy it can take and they are more willing to explore the concept of building a wooden cage. My friend soon realized the advantages of such a cage and built a beautiful enclosure for his degu family.

What a beautiful cage! It looks so lovely! What kind of wood did he use to build it with? It looks so smooth. Did he make a frame first and then screw the wood panels to the frame? Is it a different plan than what you use? How are the levels attached to the walls?

The plan he used for the cage looks very similar to the one I use...the difference I noticed was the levels. If you look in the photos you can notice strips of metal screwed into the levels and into the wall, tightly securing them in place.
This is the first cage he has built, yet its one of the pretiest ones I have seen.
