I used puffed rice and oats for training as they don't have to be fed in such moderation as most other treats! Plus, my girls LOVE it

I got given some flaked rice today and the girls love it.
Does anyone know if it's okay to give them? It's 100% flaked rice, so no added sugar or anything, so I can't see it being any different to puffed rice. Would my assumption be correct?

Yes flaked rice is fine, or at least that's what i've read.

Yes flaked rice is fine, or at least that's what i've read. You've just made Willow a very happy goo. I've now got one that'll do anything for oats and one that'll do anything for flaked rice. Darn addicts!!!

Hi guys!! I'm new here and have been a degu owner for just over a week To cut a long story short, we got two last Thursday then this Thursday one of them fell very ill, the vet said it was probably pneumonia, and she died early Friday morning Whilst at the vets we showed the bag of nuts we had been giving them (as treats, to get to know our smell, etc) and the vet said they are 'human' nuts and would have been processed in a factory with 'other human food' and so we shouldn't give them to the degas!! There's cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts and I think peanuts in the bag no sugar or anything just pure nuts.. I don't think Little One (the one who died) got ill because of the nuts, as the other one had some and is fine, but am worried about giving them again. However a friend of mine has 4 degus and gives them the same nuts and they love them and she's had no problems! xx

Hallo Nicola and welcome to the forum! It is so sad to hear that you lost one of your degus so soon.
The nuts you mention are all OK as treats for degus but should be given very sparingly. The first post in this thread lists some treats which you can give on a regular basis, such oats for example.
There is a lot of information on this forum, but don't hesitate to ask any questions you have.
How old is the one degu you have? As I am sure you'll know, degus should have companions. Because you don't know exactly what happened to Little One, I would give it a couple of weeks, but it would good if you could have a lookout for one ore two degus to join the other one (the Big One?).

Hi, thank you Thanks, it was very sad. Because it happened so soon Pets At Home gave us a 'replacement' (and our vet bill back!) and so 'Big One' (we really must name them lol) was only on her own for about 24 hours. She was not happy about this! We introduced the new one into the cage after cleaning it and left her about 10 mins then put the Big One back in.. they are getting along great. I wanted to get a friend for the Big One ASAP as she seemed quite depressed, and is much happier now!! They are both about 9-10 weeks old I have been reading and found lots of information, like that they can have some cereals and ryvita!! I love my animals so would never give them something without checking, especially degus as they are diabetic!! Thank you xx

It's good to hear that the Big One already has a companion Just one other thing. We have had so many times recently that Pets At Home didn't determine the sex of the degus correctly. If you are not absolutely certain that you have two girls, you can post pics of their “bits” here so that we can confirm it for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would like to add Millet seeds to this list. I gave a millet spray to my Goo's the other day and the loved it! It was the first time they had tried it, I just pegged it inside the cage and it last just over two full days I think, they kept going back to it for little nibbles. Thanks for this idea!

I have that petal and pumpkin patch and my guys LOVE it .... they fight over who gets the "biggest" pile (give them their own pile of treats) and eat every last piece.
I can't wait until the summer because the entire front of my house has marigolds (probably a 6-8 foot section) and guess who gets to eat most of the flowers? To bad I don't know what the tree in our front yard is, I wish it was degu friendly.

I also feed mine mini shredded wheat, broken into pieces they don't get one each, for breakfast. Breakfast time here is Bedlam as we have 11 gorgeous Goos, 3 chins and 2 G.pigs.
I bake 'cookies' for mine that consist of all healthy ingredients and they would kill for them and very often try! I use them for training and blatent bribery. If anyone wants the recipe let me know and I will post it along with where to buy the ingredients. I always try to give them all natural foods where I can, my Goo cupboard is steadily growing but having been a slave to them for the last few yrs I am still losing the once weekly veg battle.
