I am soooo jealous you have degus and chins happy together. My degus HATE my chins. Has caused much expense to create two cages! How did you go about getting them together?

I really don't know the ins and outs when it came to introducing them all, as I rehomed them as a group. Same my other degus and chinchillas hate each other. Apart from George who likes everyone until the give him a little nip and he runs away shaking.. Bless him. I would like to get him paired up again in the future but just don't have the space or time for any more right now. Im still waiting for the latest addition to the family she was due Thursday

Degus can eat chinchilla pellets or guinea pig pellets laineybell. As for treats if you hand feed the treats then you don't need to worry about the slightly different diets.
Also you'd need to make sure the wooden toys were degu safe if buying from a chinchilla website.
Otherwise I see no problem with them all living together.

That's very cute.
I thought the biggest issue with chins and degus together was that chins are nocturnal and degus diurnal/dawn and dusk creatures.
Have they all adapted to keeping the same sort of hours?

Blimey, I don't think we are likely to hear from the OP as this thread is four years old!
The pic of the chin goo heap is amazing though!
I agree that chins being nocturnal would most likely be the biggest issue.

ilikedegus, Jus works at a place that keeps degus and chins together, maybe she can answer your query. Be patient though as she's a bit busy and doesn't get on as much as she used to.

Hiya! Yeah sorry guys working 10 hour days 6 days a week keeps me busy but I promise I'll try harder haha! Been in a busy zoo I think our chins have simply adapted to a diurnal cycle as there's lots of people around during the day and noone around at night. I can't really speak for introductions as they were in together when I started but I'll ask about at work and see if anyone can help! Since we had Pip put to sleep unfortunately Squeak is the only degu in with the chins now, and while he seems happy enough with his other species company I'm thinking about putting some pressure on them to get another degu or two, so we might be in the same boat!

Hi Jus, didn't expect you to get back so quickly! Interesting with the chins, I thought they were meant to get stressed if they didn't have quiet during the day. Everytime I've seen them at public zoos etc they've been asleep, unless having some diurnal friends just forces them into that pattern as well? I think trying to get Squeak some fellow degus would be a great idea, I can't quite work out the logistics of a degu piling on a chinchilla or vice versa

I don't really know much about chins but they seem happy enough. Yes I'm gonna have a word with the mammals team but I think they will be hesitant as there's nowhere to possibly do introductions. The degu/chin pile is adorable! I have seen Squeak lying on his back with two chins grooming his belly before, the cutest thing ever!
