yep my first chin my so called friend was going to let him out in the woods because he was boring!!
I found Chinsrus and then rescued 2 boys. I now have 8 chins i love them. Try that site its gr8 and everyone helps , even though they have different opinions they all come up with the same conclusions!

why oh why are your parents getting you something you know nothing about??? I don't get it no way my daughter will be getting something that requires so much care - most she can take care of is her little chinese hamster and even that has to be supervised as you are only 14 I seriously doubt you'll know what you want next week much less 5, 10 years time?? chinchillas are a HUGE commitment, they are still an exotic species (which is why you read to much conflicting information) and very delicate little beings. they are up almost all night making an awful lot of noise careering around not to mention the noises they make. they can also live up to 25 years - do your parents know all this??

Naomi makes a very good point.
I arranged a chin complete with cage and accessories for my hubby's aunt to give to her daughter for her 14th birthday. I always thought she was a real animal lover, but it has quickly become rather neglected much to my disgust. My two boys are downstairs as far from our bedroom as is possible in our house and we are STILL woken by their noise in the night. they sulk if not brought out for a run around in the evening, have delicate digestive systems meaning we have to watch carefully what they eat, and can be VERY expensive if they require veterinary treatment. Any pet should only be aquired with careful consideration!!! Given how long they can live, you need to think about where you will be in 5 years time, 10 years time! even 15 years time!!!!
