Hi! Long story. I bought a poor little lonely female degu from a local pet shop after i read up on degus and their care as they were mistreating her. They said if i bought her i MUST promise i would get her a companion as she was pining. I took her home, bought her a huuuuuuuuuge cage, and spent the next few months looking EVERYWHERE for another degu. I eventually got one a few months later, another female, Crystal who is a bit younger than the first, Angel. I spent a lot of time and effort using many different techniques and tips trying to introduce them but it just resulted in serious fighting and a couple of tripss to the vets. They still hate each other now so i had to buy them separate cages, these are taking up a lot of room in my small bedroom so i am after a cage, preferably no more than about £120 inc postage that is a double or even a triple cage. Has anyone seen any like this? Also as i now have both degus separated would it be worth buying another 1/2 and trying to introduce them to one of the girls? Especially as Crystal seems like she wants to make friends with Angel but Angel just violently attacks her. Sorry its such a long post. Hope you can help. x

Give John Hopewell a ring I cant recommend him enough. He is building me a cage 48" tall 36" wide 18" deep for £93 however the cage delivery price is £40. He will make you anything you like. I believe he is a very lucky man in that he loves his job and this comes across when you speak to him.

Thank you very much for that! I'll have a good snoop around his site . I got 2 baby degus yesterday to keep Crystal company, problem is, they both have upper respiratory infections!! As soon as i got them home they couldnt breathe properly and couldnt stop sneezing so i rushed them to the emergency vet whos given me some antibiotics to give them. Cost £80! I bought them from Pets at Home and i'm so mad that they didn't know they were ill! The vet said hopefully weve caught it in time, and they may have died very quickly in the pet shop if they hadnt noticed the illness. Luckily i know a lot about degus anyway as the shop attendants didnt offer ANY advice on looking after them. Its disgusting that they'll sell animals they don't know enough about, and that they obviously aren't very aware of the health of their animals! We called them today and theyre gonna pay the vets bill, which is good of them. But if they had taken proper care of them in the store they wouldnt be in this mess, poor little goos .

I'm so sorry to hear that hypermusic. Poor little girlies! Pets at Home are an absolute disgrace! I believe that wholeheartedly. They have 4 degus at the one where I live, and I made a point of demanding they had a vet look over one of them as its genitals were all bloodied, even though I had absolutely no intention of buying them. The person looking after them hadn't even NOTICED. This may have had something to do with the fact the girl was afraid to touch them?!! Does that sound like a crazy career choice to anyone else? She even asked whether I 'just wanted the one?' I would never buy an animal from them, I don't want to encourage them, especially as the animals I've seen in there all look a bit bedraggled and traumatised! On another note, I'm trying to introduce my Bobs to two new girls, but they keep fighting too. Any tips and tricks? Helen

From what i have found out you could try giving a dust bath to the first two then putting the same dust bath in with the new two and keep alternating over a couple of days so they should all smell the same.
