Brittany called today. They've taken a biopsy and sent it off to the lab. She's reluctant to let him come home until the results have come back (hopefully tomorrow), so she can get a better idea if any specific AB is needed. She's already added a second one to the mix, however. Ever since he woke up again this morning, Sausage has apparently had him pancaked, and they've finished the sunflower seeds I left with them lol

Not much wrong with their appetites then. Do you think Sausage is trying to tell Spud that he needs to rest.

No, none. The lab results weren't back, and they don't want to send them home without them. I was told they're just happy being goos!

The boys are home! They started reacting so wildly when I walked in, we ended up just watching and feeding them seeds for half an hour!
The lab results aren't back yet, although it's been diagnosed as bacterial arthritis. It will take a very long time to heal, if ever, so that's another on long-term Metacam.

Bacterial arthritis? Never heard of it. Going to have to look that up.
I'm so glad they were THRILLED to hear and see you, and that they are now home! HOORAY!!

I did look it up . . . and I now realize I know a bit more about it than I thought. A friend of ours ended up in hospital for about five months because of a severe infection in his knee. They didn't catch it quickly because he thought the pain in his knee would pass, but it didn't. They had to completely remove his knee, and then leave the space empty while they continued with IV antibiotics. Then they put in a knee replacement, but he had to continue with antibiotics. His ordeal was about 18 months in duration, from start to finish. They didn't call it bacterial arthritic though.

Yeah. She said it's very likely the inflammation in the foot won't go down, but he's changed his back leg movement into a skating action. He's certainly not slowing down.

I'm so sorry! I wonder what else could be done to help him.
This may be a weird idea . . . but I wonder if an Epsom salts bath, mild of course, would help him. I'm imagining a tube like thing that you could stick his leg into . . . kind of like those tubes with the rubber end that fresh cut flowers at put in from a florist (LOL!!) . . . and then only the leg would be bathed and he would mostly be kept dry. I realize it's probably a really dumb idea . . . but it's in my head.

The lab results came back today - it appears Spud has the degu equivalent of MRSA! Fortunately, Sulfatrim is helpful. We're going to add a second medication tomorrow.
If it doesn't start clearing up, he will lose his foot. He stayed in bed yesterday. He's been up today, sprawling over the heat pad.

Not the best news I know, but I'm sure you'll do everything possible to get him well again. Even if he doesn't like his meds, I'm sure he knows you're only trying to help.

I burritoed him when he came to stuff himself with porridge oats. All medicine went in! He did allow me a little cuddle before he squirmed off. I've updated the vet, so will find out tomorrow if we go ahead with a second AB.
Edit - he's going to have Doxycycline!

Quick update. Over the weekend, Spud's foot turned black, which may have been emphasised by his foot and leg being shaved, but the swelling started going down.
As of today, there's still a little swelling. However, the skin on his foot has started to change colour! The actual foot up to just before the heel has begun to turn pink! The remaining wound on the heel has now become clear, and it's looking good. Hopefully, the last of the infection will get kicked out of his system in the next few days, and he can go back to being his normal self.
