I came back to the UK, and Spidey decided to immediately prolapse his penis. He was well-behaved getting him ready for, going to, and at the vet. Silly went with because he goes into meltdown if he goes without him. He had an overnight stay to get things sorted and tidied, but I spent three days with the weekend thinking he was going to snuff it. John believes there's an issue with his chest cavity, as he's had problems dealing with anaesthesia the last few times. On Thursday night, Spud decided he wasn't coming out (appeared fine in the afternoon), and I found one of his hind legs incredibly swollen. Cue hefty dose of Metacam. Another trip to the vet, and there may be a broken metacarpal, but she thinks more likely an infection. So I'm now trying to get meds into a stubborn, independent goo too. Do you think, in their own sweet way, that they're telling you they need you at home, lol.

Ha! They love the goositter because she spoils them, and I talked to them the entire time I was away

OH OUCH!! That foot looks horribly painful! I'm so sorry, Bouncy! You returned to a downpour of health troubles for your boys. I am sure that is difficult, but I'm thankful they waited until you were back . . . you would have found it even more troubling if it all started while you were still away.

Yep! Luckily, my goositter is great. She may not have spotted the prolapse, but she certainly would have taken any of them to the vet if needed

After a week of Metacam and ABs, Spud became a lot more active, but the swelling wasn't going down. On Thursday afternoon, he went from a swollen foot with a dry, scabbed wound to a swollen foot with a large, wet, and oozing wound.
He was also refusing to take his medicated cc because he's been eating normally. The vet decided to keep him in to give intravenous ABs over the weekend and debride his foot. I took some sunflower seeds with me in my pocket, but Sausage scoffed the the lot, even jumping on Spud's head to reach the one under his nose.

Had an update from Brittany (another John-trained exotic). They removed a lot of pus, necrotic material etc from Spud's leg this morning. So far, the antibiotics haven't had much effect but, now the affected area has been thoroughly cleaned, they're giving both topical and intravenous ABs and are going to keep him in until they either see an improvement, or decide it's safer to amputate the leg before septicemia sets in.
He's feeling very sorry for himself, and the vet staff are having problems keeping an eye on him. Ever since he came back from theatre earlier, Sausage has been starfished over Spud, completely smothering him. I suggested they give him either a foldback clip, or a tummy raspberry.

Poor Spud, and Sausage, and YOU! I hope things turn a corner for the best of outcomes now that they have removed all the yuck.

Thanks. Apart from today with the anaesthesia, he's still been charging around, surprising the vets.

Spud was allowed home today! Apparently, Sausage has just been lying on top of Spud. The minute they heard my voice, they were jumping around all over the place! He's not out of the woods yet, but.......
They've got paper lining the cage for now. Sausage thought he'd be helpful by trying to make the nest instead of Spud. He had hold of the loo roll, but it was snagged somewhere. He just scrabbled, going nowhere.

I'll post the video at some point Sausage and Spud were both excited to be home again yesterday, although miffed at having paper instead of woodshavings, they settled. Unfortunately, Sausage was too excited, which then annoyed Spud.

Spud went back for a check-up today. Rebecca didn't like the progress. Given he's been on antibiotics for two weeks, the infection looks worse. He's still charging around like a nutter, but there's he's leaving a trail of blood/pus that's currently lining the cage. They are going to take some bloods tomorrow to see if the infection is a resistent strain before wanting to take more drastic action. Hopefully a different AB will sort it. In the meantime, he and Sausage are being spoilt by a trainee vet working with Rebecca this week

Sometimes its just a case of finding the right antibiotic. He has good vets and a great mum, and we're all rooting for him.

OH MY! Ditto what Savvy says! You, Spud, and Sausage are in my thoughts! I hope they are able to learn some very helpful information from the bloods that will turn things right around for Spud!
Just a random thought . . . in England . . . do you have spiders whose bite can cause this kind of injury to the flesh?

No deguconvert we're very lucky in the UK, we've got a few false widows which have recently arrived, but nothing venomous.

What a stubborn infection! Sending well wishes to you and Spud. That's cool that you can take another degu with the wounded/poorly one to the vet for company and/or support. Alice has been fine when I've taken her on her own, but I could imagine Lily (or "Lily liver" as I like to nickname her because she's very timid) having a panic attack.
