Brownie seems to be holding her back leg up when walking- she seems to have a bit of motion in it (it's not dangling lifelessly)
Should I be worried about it being broken? I'm retooling the cage to be limp friendly right now and she's going to the vets first thing on monday. (appetite is fine and she's active)

Have a feel of her leg to see if it feels hot or cold, hot indicates an infection, cold indicates loss of circulation. If she'll let you touch it without pulling away, then its likely not to be a break but check her paw and leg for any cuts etc.
Degus are prone to sprains due to landing badly. A heat pad will encourage her to rest.
Hope she feels better soon.

it feels about the same temp as the other paw and she's not reacting particularly badly when I touch and poke it. She's using it to fight me which I guess would be too painful if it was broken.
She does NOT want to be held today lol

It sounds like she's landed badly and jarred it. They really should get the message that they are ground squirrels and stop trying to be tree dwellers, lol.

I took most of the climby stuff away and lowered the middle shelf (and blocked the mineshaft to the level below) so she can rest. And Mocha is not happy... she is scaling the sides while Brownie snuggles down.

We went to the vets today because it looked a bit worse, he didn't feel anything obviously wrong, but we opted to treat with painkillers as a soft tissue injury and follow up more if there's no improvement by thursday

Hey, I’m new to this but I have a question about one of my degus. I have two degu named Cherry and blossom but today when I got home cherry was very limp on her back legs and has a swelling on her right shoulder. She is about 2 years old and I have had her since she was a baby. I don’t know what to do she is going to the vet tomorrow. Can I do anything for her tonight? She seems to be eating fine and doesn’t seem like she’s in pain. I have the 2 story critter nation and blocked off the bottom everything for her is in easy reach and her sister can still jump around. Also what should I expect from the vet, I’m really worried

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry to hear about your degu.
I'm going to have to be brief as my battery needs charging.
It's possible she has had a fall, it's quite common in degus, and has picked up an injury or two. You are doing the right thing by confining her to one level and getting her to a vet. The only other thing which may help her is putting a warm snugglesafe in there. This will encourage her to rest.
Make sure she has food and water in easy reach and please let us know how she gets one.
Oh and don't be afraid to ask any questions you need to, both on here and of your vet. Does your vet have experience of degus?

My vet doesn’t have experience with degus in particular but has treated other rodents.

Just got back from the vet and it’s not very good news. The swelling in between her shoulder and chest pushing her right arm out. The x-rays showed that her spine is a bit messed up and my vet thinks that a sharp turn in her spine is pinching a nerve that moves her back legs. The vet gave her meta cam and an oral antibiotic, we are now waiting for results on what cells are in the swelling. She’s still acting the same as before and still wants to eat.

Hey, so I have to give her an oral antibiotic that doesn’t taste good. How would you recommend to give it to her? My vet said to hide it in another food that she likes, but I don’t really know what to use.

Whats her favourite treat? You could try to hide it in organic veg baby food, just make sure there are no additives, sweeteners or meat. Cold porridge made with water has also been used in the past for hiding meds.

Her favourite treat is probably peanuts which I give to her vary rarely but I’ll try the baby food.

If she likes peanuts, try peanut butter, but again make sure it doesn't contain sweeteners.

At this point, her body may need the extra calories to help with her healing, so I also encourage trying out peanut butter to get the antibiotics in.
