I would guess they have figured out that's how you open the door, and are trying to open it!

Hazel . . . I don't recall if you have given this information to us before, but what are the dimensions of your degu cage, the number of complete levels in it, and the number of degus you have? It is possible they may be feeling crowded in their cage.

They like to make noise. Mocha won't leave the toy with the bell alone, but only if I'm laying down to rest!

hold on, how does that work?? they're prey animals so surely making noise would attract predators in the wild

hold on, how does that work?? they're prey animals so surely making noise would attract predators in the wild Degus are pretty smart, and similarly to many pet animals, will quickly realize that there's no predators around inside the house they're familiar with. Since they feel safe and sound, they will do all kinds of things they wouldn't really have the luxury to do in the wild. It's a pretty common behavior for bored cage animals to rattle the bars, and sometimes they do it even if they aren't bored.
My Pulla often signals that he wants attention by standing on his hind legs against the cage door and beating on it with his tiny little hands

Most doors have a catch to hold it closed. If their rattle has shaken it loose, I'd see if you can tighten it. There's often a small screw on the back If you can't, think about something like a padlock to hold the doors closed.
Try distracting them away from the door. Try a foldback clip on a bar! Be warned, it's noisy!
