I have 2 male degus (brothers - 3years of age).. I plan on getting two females (2,5yrs of age - sisters) .. Can they live - ( have their cage ) in the same room?.... Will this have negative effect on the pairs?.. or will they get used to haveing an another degu pack close by?
They should be ok, but expect a lot of squeaking when they new pair arrive until they get used to other degus around. You will need to make sure their cages are a sufficient distance apart to prevent any 'accidents.'
Yeah, it's a good idea to have at least a handspan of distance between the cages, because accidents can occur if they are within touching range... in all senses of the word. There have been reports of various rodents getting pregnant through cage bars... somehow, and it's certainly possible for someone to bite at paws or noses through bars. But it should not be an issue to have them in the same room, even if they can detect each other. In general, even if they can't associate directly, degus enjoy knowing that there are more of them close by, as long as they don't feel that their territory (within their cage) is threatened.
UPDATE: Picked up the two girls..today and Trico have been "singing" and talking to himself..
I let them smell some of the bedding the girls have/had... so they could smell them(closer).. and Trico been rolling and trying to mix his scent with the bedding i put out.... Never experienced such change in degu lol..guess he is in love ..idk He wasnt aggressive cuz he made happy noices when he saw them... The girls didnt seem to care much for him ..they just looked at him. (Taico didnt seem to react as much as Trico did)
The girls will probably get more intrested in them as they get used to their new home. Animals in new locations are often careful and don't try to associate too much with others before they become a bit more familiar with the area.
Boys are usually very intrested in any and all girls, of course
