It looks like a modified bird cage yes, its not the first we've come across.

Yes, originally that would have been a bird cage. Some companies now take their big bird cages, and add a shelf or two and then sell them for smaller rodents, but the cages were first designed for birds.
So, if the bottom tray is metal, then you don't have to worry about them chewing it at all. Put it up inside the cage, then slide the removable grid back under it, to hold it in place. And then do tie that grid in place so it cannot shift, because if it slides out even just a centimeter or two they will use the gap for an escape. If it has some sort of catch or tab to hold it, make sure it does its job securely, otherwise tie it in some way.
(And if there are smaller doors up on the sides of the cage, make sure they are latched or tied, too. Some just slide up and down, relying on gravity, some have a spring to hold them shut, but you don't want to take the chance that the goos will figure it out...)

hi cohorts, today i went out and bought back-2-nature small animal bedding, a hay cube, and a "kebab" of chew wood on a string "skewer". needless to say, the girls are eating well tonight. babbies once it's time to change the bedding, i'll deffo do the tray swap.
