Put a piece of cardboard over the grating, it will stop their little paws getting hurt.

They might, but its cheap to replace until you can get a permanent fix.

is it safe for me to use normal cardboard?

Yes, a cardboard box will be fine, just remove any tape, sticky labels and staples.
Your set up needs some work. The ledges need to be replaced with full levels as there is not enough running space. The ramps need to go up to the ledges as degus are really bad climbers, the ramp in the picture literally just goes to the bars and nowhere else. I'd move the wheel as well as its too high and doesn't have anything underneath for them to jump onto. You will find out that degus jump on and off their wheels quite regularly and you've got a sheer drop beneath yours.
Sorry to be harsh, but I'm thinking of what damage they can do to themselves.

it's okay cwen, constructive criticism is how we grow x tbh this is just how it was left by the old owners, who used to keep the degus in a carrier cage. i'm out at the minute, what should i buy from the pet shop (support your smol local businesses UwU)?

ALSO i know the sensible thing to do is name them nibbles, clover, and scrunchie or some other PET names, but.................... i am very tempted to name them after the three members of europop band o-zone. what demon possesses me???

OK, what food have they been fed on? You may need to change their diet if it isn't suitable.
Lookout ledges that attach to the side of the cage are always good as they can be used as steps to other levels.
A second water bottle is advisable with multiple degus.
A hut or somewhere they can hide is welcome, especially in a new environment.
A dust bath if they don't already have one, oh and bathing sand obviously.
Tunnels are great, they love tunnels.
Degu safe treats which can be used as a training aid.
I'm sure there's loads more, but it will take time to get it all sorted.

also is it normal for degus to skitter from ledge to ledge on the vertical cage walls? No, not really, this is why they need full levels and ramps, but if its the only way they can get from ledge to ledge, what option do they have?

they eat brown-green star-shaped biscuit-type food from pets at home, not sure what kind since it's in a plastic cereal-bin thing. i put a treat for each through the bars and it was so cute, they held it in their forepaws and made squeaking noises!! there is a second water bottle, but i'm not sure how to attach it to the cage walls. i have some sand, it half fills one of those little plastic bags the major supermarkets had rolls of out near the loose veggies. is it too late for them to learn names? they don't respond to theirs.

also, they don't use the ramp to get to the bottom floor? they fall BOOMPF onto the grating and i dread to think what it's doing to their poor feeties.

It sounds like Science Selective which is ok, but boring. Check out www.ratrations.co.uk for forage ideas. If you give them a call, they'll advise and their prices are very good. Avoid anything with sugar. I've found a metal chinchilla dust bath to be the most durable, they cost about £10 from p@h, but I think you can get most places. Water bottles can be attached with a short length of curtain wire with a hook on each end. As long as it holds the bottle in place it will be fine.
