Hello,
About 5 days ago I had one my degus, princess bubblegum. sadly pass away after falling very lethargic and cold and the vets couldn’t do much to help.
I have been very worried due to the fact she was barely 6 months old and has left her sister Marceline alone, but she seems to do be doing very strong and is still eating, drinking and being just as active as if nothing really happened. I was just wondering if she will need to eventually be paired up with a new friend and if so how long?

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Degus are very social so she will need a degu friend before too long, please read through our introduction section for the best way to proceed when you find her a companion. deguworld.proboards.com/thread/17619/deguconverts-detailed-introductions-fighting-guideThey will need to be housed side by side but so they can't physically reach each other, but can see and hear each other. What is your current cage set up? We may be able to advise on a what would work best.

Hello Itsollie, and welcome to the forum. I am very sorry for your loss! It is never easy to lose one of our fur babies.
Ditto what Savvy has suggested and asked.

I'm sorry for your loss, what a shame losing such a young degu.
If you would like to look around your local area for what degus are available, we would be happy to advise on who might make the best match.

Sorry for the late reply, I’m currently working on getting a bigger cage due to my cage being too small (I’ve been urging my parents to let me for ages but they wouldn’t budge) but due to having quite a small house with limited space it seems best for me to get a larger cage and seperate them horizontally with a mesh (I will try and attach a photo once I’m hold of the new cage). This is of course unless you have a better idea

It was a heartbreaking day, I’m just hoping i managed to give her the best life I could! That would be great help as I’m not too sure where to look, I live in the Hertfordshire area and I think my parents would prefer if we would get another single degu, but i have managed to convince them to get two if we need to

What cage were you thinking of? There are a couple of options for degu cages.

I’m not too sure yet I’m still browsing options, what are the best ones to get that aren’t too expensive ? I’m still very new to all of this I’m sorry.

We were all new to this once so please don't worry. Do you know what your budget is likely to be?

I’m hoping nothing too much more than £250, I’m 17 and all the money I have to spend is from my job and I am willing to spend more because I love my girl with all my heart and I’m willing to do anything I can for her but £250 is my most comfortable

Thank you so much, I have been looking through so many cages now it’s good to finally get some recommendations! I’m really liking the look of the one on pet planet atm. Are these cages big enough to house 3 degus if needed or would they only be suitable for 2? If it’s only 2 then no worries I’ll just look a little harder to find another single degu!

I have 3 in the first cage which is roughly the same size. As long as retain enough space so you can double up on wheels, etc, you can easily extend the half levels to 3/4 levels which will give them more space. Tictac do some lovely big wheels which can be attached to the bars of these cages so they don't take up any floor space.
It takes time to get a cage kitted out so please don't think it all has to be done straight away. The only thing I would do immediately with either cage is replace the ladders with solid wooden ramps as little legs can get caught in the gaps.

Keep us posted - and we'd love to see pics of Marceline and her new friends when you find them.
Both of these cages can be a bit of a nightmare to build - picture, not written instructions! But I would suggest building the main part first, then lifting it onto the wheel base with the help of a friend.
You will be surprised when its up that they are a lot bigger than you think.
Ratrations and zooplus do a range of wooden accessories, and tictac do fantastic wheels. Tictac aren't cheap, but their wheels last forever!

You can try googling for rescues in your area, there might be an RSPCA centre nearby, or smaller rescues quite often have a Facebook page. There is also a degu rehoming group on Facebook. You can also check pet rehoming sites and second hand sites but you need to be a bit careful wih those not to buy from people breeding irresponsibly for money.
I would recommend keeping the old cage until any introduction is complete, it might come in handy.

I’ll make sure to have a look, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the rspca website for a while because there is one quite local to me, and I’ve just put a request in for the Degu UK rehoming group on Facebook. Just out of curiosity, what would be handy about keeping the old cage? It’s only because I have very very little room in my house right now and my dad doesn’t really see the need. Thank you !

If its small enough to be stored, it could be useful as a hospital or time out cage should you need one. Or it could be useful if you decide to get more degus.

I use petplanet cages for mine, and they are pretty great. With a bit of handywork you can divide each section with a whole level. With more handywork you can combine multiple petplanets into one. Now, my advice is: Look on facebook market groups for them. I got one for ~ £50. I had to clean it up a bit, but couldn't fault the price.
