What a difference! Gave her the metacam and she did the degu equivalent of licking the spoon, lol.

It's great stuff, isn't it! Within a week you won't need the BDDT, she'll run to the bars, drink from the syringe, then lick it clean!

But she knows that if she doesn't go in the BDDT, she doesn't get the extra sunflower and pumpkin seeds, lol.

Hahaha! You could give the others seeds, but make her wait until she's had a drink? Not going to the BDDT may be considered an added bonus

I'm glad Sphene appreciated your huge effort! As much as a degu appreciates anything we hoomans do, lol.

Sphene has today shown her appreciation in true degu style - she pee'd on me!

Been a bit worried about them all in the current heatwave (28C or 82.4F outside) so I've been doing all I can to keep the room cool. Luckily its north westerly facing so doesn't get even a glimpse of the sun until its setting and then you can just about see it in the corner of the window.
Reggie has found a cool comfy spot on her hay pile, Sphene goes to sleep in the top nest with Little Amber, but Ruby the Foody is a bit restless in the heat and alternates between sleeping on one of the wheels or the small bottom lookout ledge, which is where I found her this morning.
I gave her a quick visual check through the bars and she seemed OK, quiet, but OK. When I fed them I found I needn't have worried, at the usual call of 'who wants breakfast!' she shot up that ramp so fast I swear she teleported!

Savvy, do you have ceramic tiles or anything like that that you can cool in your refrigerator?

I do, but they don't like them.

HA! Of course! I wonder how they would feel about some ice inside a sealed jar?

If the heatwave continues, I'll give it a go.

I wonder if you could chill something down but then wrap it in a tea towel or something just to take that cold shock away.
I'll never forget the terror on one of my dwarf hamster's face when I gave him one of those plastic icecubes and he touched it for the first time.

I always put the tile underneath something anyway, usually under their bed, but they avoid the area.

How weird! Goos gonna goo, I suppose.

What if you put it above a favored spot, so that the cold air it makes is falling downward towards them? Same idea for a bowl or jar of ice?

Their favourite spot is the open topped nest, to put it above, I'd have to place it on the top of the cage and I'm not sure I can reach that high on crutches. I had a similar problem with Dixie and heat pads, he just wouldn't use one until he only had a few weeks left to live. I think he had the attitude that heat pads were for wimps (macho goo!)
Both of the wheels are in the shade, and metal, so they remain fairly cool. I've checked the temperature in the lounge and its 24C during the day, dropping to 20C at night. I've been leaving the windows open but locked during the night which is helping, and I'm refreshing their water regularly.
They are all eating and drinking normally, just not that active during the day.
The temperature is forecast to drop to about 18C by the end of the week.

yeah, okay, definitely not worth that risk. How about over their second favorite place? When I had my goos, they were regularly at 24C in the summer, as we wouldn't consider using the AC until it passed that temp. They got slower and lazier, but they were fine overall.
