Her eye looks quite swollen around it . . . is it just that she is squinting, or does it look like that all the time. You can tell by how fluffed up she is that she isn't feeling good.

That's good, I hope they can help. Did they give you an appointment with the exotics person/the person that knows about degus, or was it general appointment with a random vet? It might be worth a call to check you are seeing the most appropriate person at the new practice. I really want you to have a good experience this time!

Not sure which vet it was but it’s not good news she thinks it’s cancer she gave me antibiotics and ani inflammatory for 10 days to treat any infection I have a follow up appointment in 10 days to see if these help but said if it is cancer we will cross that bridge when and if it comes to that and discuss the options then I liked this vet though they seem like they care about the pet not the money and seem caring too I will probably take my boy goo with me when I go in 10 days time for a check up on his teeth ect so will take them both if I can need to ring and ask

I am sorry, Zo! That is a disheartening report. I pray that things go much better than they anticipate!
BUT to hear that you liked the vet . . . that is good news. I'm so glad you felt heard and cared for. That is huge!

I have to give Dixie tablets daily, and I've found the best way is to crush them and put them in water, then draw the medicated water into a syringe which can be administered as liquid meds.
If you wrap the tablet in a small piece of clean paper, crush it with a rolling pin, tip the contents onto a spoon, add a small drop of water from the syringe and them draw the liquid back into the syringe. It's a bit of messing around, but much easier than trying to get a degu to eat a tablet.

You could probably crush and make a paste with something strong tasting like peanut butter or mix with CC, but you might have to restrain and force syringe as it will probably taste bad.
For future reference, it's usually worth asking for medicines as liquids whenever possible.
Hope the new vet can come up with something for your boy.

I really struggled to force her medication today it took me ages she just wouldn’t give in I was thinking of taking my boy back to the vet where they did his teeth as he has been treating him already and knows his teeth I’m worried as I think he will have to go under anaesthetic again for his teeth also he is really bloated looks pregnant

I would be concerned the bloating is related to the penis prolapse. Is his abdomen firm to the touch, this would mean severe bloating? He could probably use an abdominal xray, especially if he is going under for his teeth checking again, we could do with knowing the cause of the prolapse, there is obviously something causing it.
Since he really needs more help than the old place could give, I would speak to the new place and ask if they have done degu dental work and find out how much a dental and a couple of xrays would cost.

Yes I was thinking the same thing that it could be to do with his prolapse I will ask for X-ray too he really needs one to see what’s going on the reason I said I will take him back to my old vet is that they can get me in straight the way and it’s local for me and easy to get there it’s just expensive and they just care about the money not the degu but at least he can get looked at straight the way my new vet is half an hour drive away I don’t drive and have to get a lift there it’s only open until 6:00 and I can’t get there until 5:00 when I have a lift that’s why with my girl I’m booked in at the new vets at 5:00 on Monday the old vet said it’s about £60 for a X-ray last time he had dental there it cost about £140 altogether with meds

I know it's hard, but I would ask your old vet to forward your boy's notes to the new vet and take him there. I have a vet a three minute walk away. They've always been brilliant with my gerbils, but I wouldn't take the goos there because they don't have the expertise. I choose to take the boys to see John 22 miles away because I know it's the best. You yourself have now seen how much difference a good vet can make I would see it as one good appointment vs three mediocre ones, so it may also save you a bit in the long run! Also, if you explain your difficulties in getting to them, they may be happy to do follow-up by phone or zoom to save you a trip!

I had a phone consultation today with a vet they want me to bring him in tomorrow at 11:30 and told me to prepare for the worse that if he is suffering or seems really underweight he will have to be put to sleep because they won’t be able to put him under anaesthetic as he will be to weak and it’s his quality of life to how they think he is I’m so heartbroken and shocked really worried about taking him
