I use BabyD Drops (baby care in Boots), but I try different options from time to time. Just make sure it's D3 (cholecalciferol) if you can.
Many are oil based, so try to check the base oil. I've come across olive oil, sunflower oil, oil of orange, coconut oil........

Does he look bloated or can you see any reason for the prolapse, sometimes abdominal or stomach issues can cause a prolapse? Can you pull it right out to check if there is anything wrapped round it?
A lube like KY Jelly tends to offer more slip to get it back in than vaseline.
You can offer some extra nuts, seeds and oats to try to tempt him to eat a bit more, but it's a good sign that he is eating forage.

Thanks for your reply it’s right out the hole thing is hanging down out he is a bag of bones bless him he is really underweight I’ve just took him vets again they are putting him under gas again and are going to put it back in and put a stitch in it I feel so bad for him the vet said it could of happened because he was weakened from his teeth surgery I hope it stays in because if it doesn’t I will have to let him go don’t want him to keep suffering and going through everything also because he has problems with his teeth they will keep growing back every so many weeks so it’s a lot of problems for the old little one I hope he will be ok I bet he hates me now bless him the good news is though that he has put a little bit of weight on since last time he only ways about 181

Hope it went OK.
He's having some poor luck, but I wouldn't say you have told us about anything that he can't come back from, so I think you are doing the right thing having him treated. Obviously it's going to be important how he gets on in the next few days in terms of the penis staying put and him eating a bit more normally again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him.
Do quiz the vet on a cause for the prolapse. Don't forget the vet we found on our recommended vet list is an option for you.

He had to be put under gas and his penis put back in he had a stitch in it too and is on painkillers and antibiotics for another 10 days then he has to go for a check up on his teeth then the vet had removed a pea size ball from his penis 😱 they said it was mucus and was blocking him up and probably couldn’t urinate bless him I rang the specialist vet up from the link on here first and they said they are extremely busy and only if my vet couldn’t treat him they would see him they said my vet will have to refur him if they can’t treat him they are not taking on new patients he seems ok now he keeps trying to eat his hard pellets but don’t think he is having much luck but that’s what he keeps trying to eat

OK, I'm glad they found a cause for the penis prolapse.
Have you tried breaking the pellets into small pieces for him?
You could also try some fresh grass and dandelions if you have access to them.
At least you know the situation with the other vet now.

Ask your vet to get in touch with John Chitty at Anton Vets. He's very experienced, and offers free advice to other vets and owners. You may find it hard to get hold of him by phone, but he's very good at replying to emails.
Enquiries@jcexoticpetconsultancy.co.uk 01264 729165
He's been seeing my goos for years, lectures, and even used to keep some himself!
Oh, and if he's insisting on eating his pellets, you could always soften a few with some hot water:)

I'm so sorry, Zo! You and your boy have had a really hard go!!
Please do try to get hold of the vet Bouncy has mentioned above. He is an AWESOME vet and has a special place in his heart for degus, as well as a special touch with them.

They are not able to discuss a case what has been treated by another vet

If you don't want to speak to your vet, email them and ask them to consult John. Do they know the penis has prolapsed again? It's clinical courtesy for them not to advise if they know he's being treated by another vet, because there may be contraindications. Do ask your vet, though. It doesn't sound like your fluff can resolve this by himself!
Yes, Sausagegoo had a prolapse last year, which then had an open sore and swelling because he still ran in the wheel, dragging/rubbing it along behind him. They had to treat the wound and inflammation as well as the prolapse before everything would fit back together again.

It's fairly common that stitching the penis in place doesn't work all that reliably. Since they have removed something that may have been causing the prolapse, it may go back in and stay in over the next few days if you can keep it clean and lubricated. We have had people on the forum given antibiotic creams to apply, that could be an option even if it's just to keep it clean, or if there was something antiinflammatory, that might help. I remember someone being given Canaural cream for dogs before, I'll do a search and see if I can find anything else.
Do you have a heatpad? That can really help to settle a poorly goo and may stop him fussing at his penis too if he is comfy.
...I've done a search and I'm not coming up with any other named cream than Canaural.

Isn’t the Canaural a ear drops for dogs I could order that but it will take a few days to arrive I don’t have a heat pad where do I get one of those from should I just get some ky jelly for now to try I’ve just sent an email to my vets telling them it’s prolapsed again hopefully it will go back in on it’s own I’m just worried as wouldn’t like to just leave it I really appreciate all of your help I have such a headache from all this and it’s keeping me up at night worrying

The Canaural is ear drops for dogs but it's antiobiotic and anti-inflammatory and I think has a steroid in it. I would ask your vet about it and get them to give you some because you would get that the same day if you can get to the vets. The vet may know of something different but that does the same job. Get some KY jelly on it in the meantime. I would take the sand bath out too. Easiest option for a heatpad is a snugglesafe, shop around, prices vary www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_beds_baskets/thermal_heated_blankets/heated/59060

I cleaned it and put ky jelly on it couldn’t get it back again spoke to my vets they told me to bring him in again first thing in the morning so they can do it again and put a stitch in this time I’m so annoyed as I thought that is what they was meant to have done the first time that means he will have to go under gas anaesthetic again I’m so worried putting him through this again ahhh I hope he will be ok going through it all again anaesthetic is so risky especially at his age and this will be the third time now and his eye also has white coming from it from last time he was there

I know this may sound a bit mercenary, but check your bill to make sure they are not charging you for things they haven't done.
Personally, I'd be looking for another vet.
Please keep us updated as to how he's doing.

Yes savy it’s funny you should say that about the vet bills when I get a receipt from them it doesn’t show you the cost of the different things done all it has is the total so I never know what they are charging for and yes I do need to look for another vets this one is not good really no wonder probably because it’s the vets 4 pets one 🙄so update on how degu is doing he has lost weight again which isn’t good his eye looks bad from the gas they gave him but I think that will be ok the vet put a stitch in this time and told me I have to make sure he doesn’t bite at it I don’t know how I’m going to stop that he says he has lots of mucus stuff coming out of his penis again like before so that’s what’s probably causing his prolapse I have to make sure he is still urinating I don’t know how I will know if he is or not and he said his teeth are bad on the right side he thinks it’s root problems he wanted to do an X-ray on him to look at his teeth and abdomen to see what’s going on but I said I couldn’t afford the X-ray today I’ve spent £300 plus in the last week on everything if he can’t urinate and needs surgery on his teeth and doesn’t get any better I think it’s cruel making him go through all of this I think I’m being selfish keep putting him through all of this I really don’t want him to suffer and he has a lot of problems what would you do if it was your degu
