I am heartbroken writing this but sadly I lost one of my goo’s to cancer today, he took a sudden turn for the worst and passed away at the vets. My concern is that his brother Gizmo is now alone, he’a quite a feisty little goo and I’m not sure if it’s going to be best to get him a new friend. I know that with mourning and depression he may pass soon also but cause he’s still got a few years left I’m worried about him being alone. Is it best to find a companion of a similar age? I’ve had them since they were 6 months old and they’ve never been apart so I’m worried of the best thing to do. Thanks for any advice.

I am so sorry for your loss, Stoosh! What a painful day for you and for Gizmo! My heart goes out to you both.
I think you need to give yourself and Gizmo time to mourn. I do think it is in his best interests to have a new companion, or even two, and of like age is helpful. How old is Gizmo? You can be looking, because in this day and age, finding and being able to get the found degus, can be very challenging. But I don't think you need to worry and feel like you have to have a new companion for him by the end of the today, or this week.

I am so sorry for your loss. We've been in this position a few times, your guy needs to grieve, as do you. there is no linear way to support him. When you are all ready there can be thinking around a friend but give yourself a moment to both grieve.
I gave loki a teddy (without eyes) when we lost his brother, I tried lots to help him re-intergrate but in the end he was happy with a mate in the cage next to him and copious amounts of cuddles from us.
I am so sorry for your loss and if you want to talk, I am more that happy to listen. much love to you and your family xx
