Hi, I have two baby degu females, Milka and Vanilla, they are curentlly 2months and 5 days old. I weigh my degus once a day per two days time, and i noticed that most of the degus are 125-155grams, but I'm concerned about the females, Milka is fine, she's 156grams, but Vanilla is about 175g and I'm concerned that she may be pregnant? That may sound impossible but the boys (we keep them seperate but sometimes together when they sleep, now they're sleepin in a different cage) since it's degu breeding season, boys have started to go on females, even moms. I am very concerned about her, plus she looks very fat and she started to be come this way around 2weeks ago, but she doesn't eat a lot of food and it's not gas. Is this normal? Should I bring her to the vet?

You won't REALLY know she's pregnant for a few more weeks, you you'll have to wait and see. If your suspicions continue, I can only suggest offering more calcium seeds to help hers and the pups' development.
Regarding actual weight, you've said she's looking fat. Could it just be she's a bigger goo, or is she distinctly chubby? I've got goos now that range from 245g to 340g, but they are all very active, vary in sizes, but aren't porky, as such. They're also all boys, so it's probably not much help - sorry!

You can buy from whole food shops, markets etc. The oil seed chart in this thread tells you what is appropriate deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15602/vegetable-seed-nut-nutrition-chartsI'm kind of confused about your cage arrangements. It's very important that boys over 6-8 weeks do not go near any females at any time, not even their mother. It's usually impossible to be sure a female is pregnant until the last month of the 3 months gestation and sometimes not obvious until the last couple of weeks. Unless they could do some kind of urine test, I doubt a vet would be able to tell.

Boys as young as 6-7-8 WEEKS old can make females pregnant. Your boy degus should not, NOT EVER, be allowed into the same cage or space as ANY of the females. Any and all of your females could get pregnant, mothers, sisters, cousins--ALL of them. Degu males don't know, "oh, you're my mother, you're my sister, I should stay away from you," they just feel the hormones tell them to mate. PLEASE keep them completely separate, completely, always, from now on. Let's hope no one is pregnant, yet, but the most you can do is feed them well to try and keep their health the best it can be, in case they are.

Okay, thank you so much for advice, I will not keep them together never again, even sleeping, only troughout cage bars just to make sure that they don't forget each other.

Even then you will need to make sure there's a gap. Just one set of bars is not sufficient to ensure they can't mate.

Hi everyone sorry if my English isn't the best 🙂. Some of you may already know me. I have one boy degu named Gaara and a girl named Pumpuška. While we were waiting (2 weeks) to cut little boys ball of, he mated with her again. We have babies AGAIN. Now we have a new caged, and I wonder if we could keep one baby girl in that one cage. I know we can't keep a baby boy, because he could fight thill death with his father for a female. But is it safe to keep two girls and a boy?

You can keep multiple females as long as there is only one male and he must be neutered. You can have several groups like this along as each group is in a separate cage.
Hope this helps.

Hope this helps When my girl gave birth, we had to wait two weeks for neutering. In those two weeks my girl got pregnant again and gave birth yesterday. I already found new family for babies, but want to keep one baby degu. So if it's ok, I will geep one. But we still don't know if there is 3 or 4 babies and their genders

Gabba . . . how long ago was your male neutered? I'm thinking that it is potentially near to three months? When was the recent litter of pups born? If your male is neutered now . . . have you kept him in with momma and pups? He will be an excellent help to momma, and will help with the training/educating of the pups.

He was neutered June 15th Most recent litter august 23rd (yesterday) He is kept with mommy and the babies. He realy xared about his babies, takes care of them more than mama does. And I really want to keep one babie, if there is a girl. I found loving home for them, so as soon as babies can be separated from their parents, they will ho to the new home that already has degus

Please don't separate them from the parents before six weeks of age. Just because a pup is weaned doesn't mean it is ready to be separated from it's parents. It still needs that time with them to mature and keep learning from them what it means to be part of a degu colony. Pups that are separated before six weeks show many behavioral short comings and have difficulty blending/bonding with other degus.

When she gave birth first time, we had to wait two weeks for neutering the boy. I just want to keep one babie girl. So now I know it is safe to keep two girls and neutered boy in oone big cage

Awesome!! I mentioned it only because I think sometimes people put pressure on owners to release their pups to a new home earlier than is good for the pup. There are breeders that send out their pups that are 4-5 weeks old, and they defend this practice. I just wanted to share that information with you in case you didn't already know it, but thankfully you do! You can keep two, or even three, females with your neutered male. The only concern might be that you have a cage that is large enough to accommodate the spatial needs of three degus. You mentioned having a new cage . . . is it something you could incorporate with your current cage so that together they make a bigger cage? Do you know how to identify male and female degus? You probably do by now.

Cage might be little to empty, but I am still working on that so thry have more things to play with or more thing to climb Attachments:

That is awesome! I know it may have seemed like a weird question to ask ... but I brought home two males from an "male only" pet shop, where a case full of pups had all been vet certified as male. I introduced them to our two males that had been deeply grieving the loss of the alpha male in their colony of three. Three months later, we discovered there were 12 pups in hidden in the most secluded nest of their cage. It is hard to imagine that a vet would make that mistake, but it certainly appeared to be that way. With that experience in my history . . . I like to ask about it.
Your cage is lovely and large! There is much that you can do with it to increase surface area to give them all kinds of running room. You have enough height to put in two more complete levels above the base.

If I understood correctly, we thought we bought two boys too. We checked ourselves, but we didn't know that they genetals look the same kinda. After not full 2months having them, she gave birth... Her name was Goku even. i called where we bought them. And they wanted to fix something for that mistake. So the store paid for neutering and gave us free stuff. But while we were waiting for neutering.. bam shes pregnat again. I still talk to people who I gave first babie degus. And now I talk to girl who will take two boys. She already has 5 degus, 3 girls and one boy. So the boy will have new friends. She introduce them. The girl has two dogs, 3 guinea pigs, 2 rabbits, horses. Basically little girl loves animals. I just came home and the girl is so small... Like too small it seems.. when we had first litter of 2 girls and one boy, yeah boy was bigger, but girls were notmal size too to theys age. But now my little girl is soo small... I think I will name her the same name as my mom dog, witch I gave her the name ' Maže' it means ''little girl'' cuz in Lithuanian language almost all words have e gender. But I want too make a name a bit different ' Mažytė ' and it means "little baby girl' idk how to translate it. It the same as 'dog' and 'puppy'

Sadly, it makes sense for her to be really small if she has been pregnant twice already. That will stop her from developing normally and leaver her smaller. The only thing you can really do to help her is to make sure that she has a lot of food available. It would also be good if she could get extra calcium for the pregnancy. Sesame seeds have a lot of it, for example.
You don't need to keep the male separate from her while she's pregnant, but I would ask them to hurry with the neutering, because it's possible for her to get pregnant quickly after giving birth (as you've noticed). So it would be best if the boy is neutered by the time she gives birth. The neutering also takes some time to take effect, so it might be necessary to separate them for some time, depending on how quickly they get it done.

Teemu, just to clarify, the male/father was neutered already, two weeks after the female delivered the first litter of pups . . . he is safe now, as is she from any further pregnancies. The little one is the female pup in the new litter.
