Hi, I'm looking at getting some degus but am stuck with what cage to get. I am in the UK so cages that don't ship from elsewhere would be a great help. I know that it has to be tall with plenty of space and that one without plastic is preferred. I'm just running in circles right now trying to find one and my searches keep showing me the same stuff. I came across the Liberta Explorer and know that I might need to modify it. It's 159 cm h, 95 cm w and 63 cm deep. Would this be good? Thank you

Welcome to the forum Little Pet Warehouse ship from the uk, www.littlepetwarehouse.co.ukA lot of members have their Aventura cage which is suitable for degus. I'm unsure of others, shipping wise, but I'm sure others members will know.

Tall is not as important as wide, with lots and lots of floor space. Degus are essentially ground squirrels. In nature they stay low, running across the ground and rocks and maybe up into low bushes to forage for food. (Tree squirrels climb trees and spend lots of time up high. Degus are not tree squirrels.) So first priority is get the biggest floorspace that you can for them. Then the height of the cage is important so that you can put more levels in to give them even more floor space. Liberta Explorer and all the similar models are suitable for two or three degus. The space they provide is much improved if you extend the half shelves into full shelves.
The only easily available better style of metal cage is the Savic Royale XL, which has more length, but has plastic shelves that probably need replacing so it never seems like very good value for money.
BTW they don't actually need a tall cage, they need length for running space, the height is just a way of stacking up enough running space together.
Other options for a big enough cage are stacking vivs, but they need modification for ventilation or self build.
