Hello, so i have three degus (all females) and one is 4yr old,(maja) other two are 5-7months old(sakura, kanele) i got them when they were two months old as friends for maja, the introduction went well, sometimes they fight for hearchy (idk how to spell this) but maja got unwell. maja has symptoms like: sneezing, stuff out of nose, breathing hardly, grindingteeth often, loss of apetite(appreciates treats always tho we give them not a lot of them, eats normal food rarely) and shes less active, for the eye, when she bathes herself she gets this white goo that i have to wipe off, cause it doesnt go away(it does after some time, but i prefer to wipe it off since its not that comfortable for my goo:/) also she spends the day with babies like 80% of the time (ill get into that later) we have been to the vet, he gave us some syringes (he wanted to give antibiotics but she weights 210grams so he couldnt so he gave us yummy and not yummy ones, not yummy ones 0,2mg, yummy ~0,25mg) for her breathing and eye drops called cornergel, something like that, because she may not see in that eye. The eye is getting better after 3 weeks of use, but the breathing is still not that good, i wasnt able to get her to the vet again since corona and we have a restriction till January 3th, and new years today (by the way, happy new year! ๐ ). so about the babies, at december 10th and 12th we had babies from sakura and kanele, (unexpected!!!) we bought em from a person that probably didnt know they were pregnant, but we have now 7 babies, kanele 3, sakura 4:) they all are healthy and fast:) cute lil goos:) maja mainly takes care of them and mommas are only feeding em....maybe cause they dont have a father.. i think maja has something wrong with her molars, but the vet didnt get the chance to check out them properly cause maja didnโt like that:(, the front teeth are orange, vet told us that upper ones are too short, and the down ones are too long, but that doesnt touch the gum or anything do its fine. another thing that concerns me that maja doesnt really eat hay, i tried many kinds and types, but she doesnt really like it:( i tried using some vitamins for rodents that have good vitamins. Any information will be appreciated ๐ i am really worried ๐ญ theres a photo of her ๐ฅบ photos.app.goo.gl/vPunU1uaBhnj9dcn9

It certainly sounds like an issue with molar roots to me! Have a read of this, and you will hopefully feel more enlightened: deguworld.proboards.com/thread/21967/guide-degu-dental-healthIt's worth making sure you have an exotics vet with good degu experience! In the meantime, your little lady is very light, and the vet will most likely tell you to get some more weight on her before sedating her. If you don't have any Critical Care, try unsweetened, vegetarian baby food, ground nuts, some porridge made with water etc. You may also need to find a way of syringing some water into her. Please shout if you have any more questions P.s. Maja is so cute!!

Hello, Cookiedegus, and welcome to the forum! I'm so sorry that your girl Maja is unwell! I would say the same as Bouncy. Ground oil seeds (https://deguworld.proboards.com/post/85255/thread), nuts (https://deguworld.proboards.com/post/85256/thread), and porridge oats, will be very helpful to getting calories in her. Even getting her weight up to 250 grams will be significant gains and will increase her ability to bounce back from any sedation. There are internet site listed here . . . deguworld.proboards.com/thread/15794/internet-shops-specialist-degu-foods . . . that may help you with forage items that might stimulate interest in Maja more than hay does. ALSO . . . some of our members have posted what they feed their degus, which might be helpful to you if you choose to look into the internet shops. deguworld.proboards.com/thread/21261/feed-degus

Thanks for replying:), so i did my research again, and it turns out that one (the only) vet shop does sell critical care!(and im lucky its only four kilometers from me )They sell 141grams only tho, and i wanted to ask if its okay when the cc mix is apple and banana flavor? You know, since degus cant have sugar and those fruits are natural in sugars. To be honest, i thought it would be more expensive like 50โฌ, but its only 23! So im really happy about that:) Also, i wanted to ask two questions, that I really need answers to, 1. How to use critical care cause i have no idea:) 2. When vets syringe the sedation thingys, where should they syringe them? In the neck, or somewhere in the body? Tysm for the help again!๐ i will also call the vet today to ask if he has time for an appointment P.s Maja told me to say hello:)

Thanks for the welcome too! About the hay, since its corona, i dont really want to ship hay from other countries, but its a problem since i live in a country where not many products are good quality for degus (i live in Lithuania) so i bought some new hay that is with peppermint and seems high quality! (Vitakraft brand) but Maja still hasnt got a slight interest for the hay, maybe she cant really eat it because of her possible molar roots problem:( I am trying to entertain her by some fresh apple gnaw sticks, but she seems to not have interest too, maybe small little bites, but the small goos are chewing it all the time:) lastly, i tried giving walnuts (opened but not taken out of the shell) and she really loves them, i dont feed her walnuts a lot, since itโs considered a treat. P.s as an extra, i will list foods that i feed them (they are my picky goos so i kinda spoil them:)ย 1. Versele laga chinchilla & degu complete (the granules or whatever they are called) 2. Party rolls as an extra appetizer:) i add about 4-6 of them into the bowl 3. Puur brand chinchilla & degu 4. Megan golden series degu mix. 5 as a snack, some jr farm degu snack i know thats much but i mix them in small quantities, main food the most

Hi Cookiedegus (and Maja!),
Do you happen to know how much your other adult degus weigh, or how much Maja used to weigh before teeth problems?
I ask because my own degus are on the smaller side (190-270g, most at 240g) and wasn't sure if yours were on the smaller or more normal range! If Maja is normally on the smaller side, it may not be possible to get her to 250g. One of my smaller, diabetic goos (usually around 210g, but goes down to 200g sometimes) has gone through two dentals, but I think his max weight would have been 240g, so not as much weight-loss as if he had been 300g naturally.
If you don't have any previous weights (or Maja looks like she's lost a ton of weight), I'd definitely stick with your plan of feeding her up! I'm not sure what avg degu weight is in Lithuania (and I'm in the US) so UK degus may be closer weights!

There is a herbivore version of cc, which is basically crushed plant matter that mixes into a paste. Consistency is up to you. I know the version you have which is, as you say, high in sugars. It's not ideal long-term, and could lead to diabetes, but perhaps you could "dilute" it with something like crushed hay or ground almonds? The latter has a high calorie count, and I use such a mix of I need to fatten one of mine up. You simply add water to mix it. I use warm water because I find it makes a better paste.
Mine tend to use gas to sedate them. You can always ask the vet. They will ask you to sign a disclaimer because anaesthesia always carries a risk. The other thing (if your finances allow) is to ask for an x-ray whilst Maja is sedated. It's the only clear way to see the extent (if any) of root problems. Glad you're getting to the vet!

That's a good point hpdegus! My lightest goo weighs an average of 250g, but most of them weigh around the 300g+ range. I guess the thing to do is treat it as a number when deciding if she's underweight. Can you see bones moving when she does? It's good practice to weigh goos regularly, say once a month. I find it a very good indication of problems that may not be visible. Oh, you could try an additive-free but butter, like almond butter, as a food too!

Well it says that the average is 170-300grams, so i guess its normal, but the vet did say when he weighed her two months ago, that she cant have antibiotics and instead gave us some powder to mix with water, its for the immune system, its called bio-lapis. I dont see her bones moving, she looks fine with that(i added a video to the same link how she moves and etc.) But she does feel heavier than the degu mamas, they weigh about 150 or so, since theyโre still not a year old. I am going to ask my neighbor to borrow some weighing stands to weigh her every week, but i will still get some critical care just in case. Tomorrow we are going to the shop to buy it:) hope they have it! About the cc again, i posted a photo of which version we have in our country and i want to know if its good:) I also hope that the x-ray is not too expensive, but it could be a huge help Also, in the page of the veterinary it shows that they put sedation in gas, but it is shown for cats, so i dont know, i will write to them. P.s is it safe for maja to be put on sedation? Because its her first time and she tends to be a little more stressed at the vet and about her condition, ah i dont know im just scared.

When I look at your photo of Maja, there is a hollow between spine and haunch that normally is not there. I think she needs the weight gain before you have her sedated. Which may be problematic if the issue is tooth related.

Alright Iโll try, but is the cc mix good (in photos again) for her? How much should I gain her weight? Is 50g enough?

Being the Herbivore Critical Care it should be fine. Right now you just need to get calories into her, so for the time being, it will be OK. Grinding up (nice and fine) some of the walnut meats that you have and adding them in with the CC will also be of help to her. I think that you need to try for the increase of 50 grams. If she is naturally small, getting her over that may be just too much for her. It could take a few weeks to see that gain as well, but the CC has all kinds of things in it to help her digestion and will work well with what the vet has already given you.

Oh, perfect! That's the exact critical care we recommend!! She can have as much as she wants! I did look earlier, but I was too quick for the new uploads. I LOVE Maja sleeping with her back paws around her ears!
DC is right, she does look underweight compared to a year. Still cute!

Hii! I have good news, so I wrote to the shop that sells critical care, they didn't have it.. But! I made myself my own critical care mix by mixing pellets(they have Timothy hay and all the vitamins) and crushed them, added water to make a paste, and maja is L-O-V-I-N-G it! She seems like she hasn't ate in like 3days or so! I will weigh her today, hoping she added some grams from my last vet visit ๐

This is excellent news! Feel free to add some ground nuts (from the home baking section of the supermarket) for faster gain. GO MAJA!!!

This is good news. Let her eat as much as she wants, she'll let you know when she's full.

And try to feed her every hour! If she's not eaten for a couple of days, her tummy will have shrunk. Good luck!
When is your appointment with the vet?
