Does anyone know a decent way to stop degus twanging the bars of the cage? I know the reason why but that's not going to happen anytime soon (he wants to go in with gizmo), already tried lemon juice but the idiot loves it and licks it's off.... also I should mention it's gotten to the point he has broken his upper teeth so now they make a point

You can try putting something else in the way more appropriate for chewing (perhaps something in wood?). The only other solution is to put more space between them, or a piece of card so that scent remains, but visual temptation is removed.
It's sometimes an indication of boredom, but I agree he's probably trying to get to Gizmo. Just keep an eye on his teeth, and make sure the regrowth is straight, and they're not growing apart.

If the only further damage is the breakage, and direction of growth hasn't changed, just keep an eye on the teeth. I've only ever had one issue with broken teeth, and this was because the top incisors broke off just under the gum line, which made eating difficult for a few days.
Try a visual block, and let us know if that helps. RIP wooden toy!
