Hi guys, Emily has been having a bit of a disagreement with the hay rack lately. She keeps on shaking the rack with her teeth which causes all the hay to fall out. Any suggestions?

It sounds like she doesn't want the hay rack. Degus can have very strong opinions of what they want and where they want it when it comes to their cages. Maybe she wants the hay as bedding, try removing the rack and placing the hay in a pile and see what she does.

I think most degus hate hay racks. You can use a bowl if you want to keep it a little bit separate from the substrate.

After many attempts at containing the hay, we gave in and would just put a big pile of it in one corner. Resistance is futile. Give in to the inevitable.

Our degus ALWAYS went after the hay rack!! They would range from chewing the bars of it, to pulling back and making it hit the sides of the cage, to climbing up and trying to chew it free of the cage from the hooks, to hanging onto the bars beside the rack - grabbing the rack with teeth and lifting forcefully - unhooking the rack on one side - run to other side to repeat and FORCEFULLY throw it to the floor. Depending on the different degu assaulting it at any given time. ROFL

Thanks for the advice, seems like I'm going to have to take it out and try and separate the hay form the bedding. The Degus protests have finally won! Can anyone recommend a way to separate a corner of the cage in order to dedicate it to hay?

Hmmm . . . maybe you could stuff a shoe box with hay?

I once put hay into a mesh dish. Spidey spent his evenings dragging it from one side of the cage to the other. I gave up, and have just chucked it a small pile ever since.

I tend to put Dixie's hay wherever he wants to sleep that week, he likes to eat himself comfy.
Reggie's hay goes in a pile on her day bed, she sleeps in her hut at night.
Wherever you put it, it will be wrong, degus are bossy like that.

Hmmm . . . maybe you could stuff a shoe box with hay? I've tried this in the before, but it soon becomes the goo's ultimate mission to destroy it in any way possible.

I had one of those . . . my boys completely dismantled it, piece by piece. LOL! Makes me wonder if the hay was crying and pleading for release . . . .
