Attempt number one at putting them in a split sandbox failed and d**n my finger hurts XD got bitten by gizmo though oddly enough he showed no aggression first, infact the new little one started it and trying to get them back just yeah hands aren't good.

Oh no! Make sure you clean the bite properly, degu bites can be nasty.

All sorted just I forgot just how much the sting at first, still proud of gizmo though not being the aggressor despite being dominant

And don't forget that little one has so far had a life when every other goo he's come across has wanted to kill him! Now he's had time alone to reflect and recover, it sounds like he's taking a stand!

Yep, but also I reckon it may have been too much too soon. All i do know is if a fight between them happens gizmo will easily win XD

Super Gizmo! I think, once their cages are next to each other, little fluffy one will realise Gizmo doesn't want to kill him When you are ready to try again, you could try a colander over one of them? Or I have several pairs of motorbike gloves

Hmm does anyone know why gizmos testicles swell up whenever he gets the substrate from the new degus cage, I'm guessing its him getting territorial about him, also his fur along his back just a strip of it from the middle to his tail sticks up

I've only had girls (apart from Hugo who lived with 5 girls and was very much bottom of the pile) but hair sticking up would be a sign of aggression/territorial in most animals. How much substrate are you swapping and how often?

3/4 handfuls once or twice a week (which was stopped last week for a week due to him biting my hand and causing it to swell like a balloon) but he also does it when he is on my bed which only he is allowed and I know there is no new degu smell in there
I should probably mention they have been let out of there cage to run around with only a perspex divider and were perfectly fine no tail wagging, hair sticking up, big balls or nothing just some talking and ignoring each other

Sounds like you're making progress!
There may not be any degu scent on your bed, but it's still a scent! All of my boys have fairly pronounced testes, so it's hard for me to gauge because they're all well-established within their respective groups.
It's nice to see the total lack of interest during free-range. How do they behave towards each other at the bars?

General talking usually and gizmo just kinda goes to sleep on some meadow hay next to him. New one has a habbit of biting the bars and chewing the plastic ledge -_-

Sounds like Gizmo is convinced! It's just the newbie that needs convincing - his chewing on the bars and tray sounds like he's still aggressive towards Gizmo

Nah oddly not, I think it's more because he wants to go in with gizmo. They spent 5 mins in each others cage just now and there was none of it

I'm also tempted to just let them out without a barrier and say screw it and let them do there thing, problem is because of the lockdown it makes going to the vet a pain if they decide to be fur balls

I get that . . . if you do decide to do that . . . you have to start somewhere, right? . . . then be right there and on top of them with towels or a sturdy colander to put over top of one, should a battle break out that goes furball.

A spray bottle with plain water in it would be a good idea too. A quick spritz usually sends them scampering in opposite directions.

Yeah squirt bottles dont effect gizmo -_- but I have plenty of gloves to buff up my hand Just gizmos hair standing up and getting enlarged testicles makes me think his testosterone levels are crazy high atm and given this was after he decided to bite me a week ago (not swollen anymore) ibb.co/D8zPn2V
