Saw this on a degu Facebook page, from the Degu Den Rescue Kent.
**** VERY URGENT APPEAL ****
Updated with more information.
We have been contacted for an urgent case. 300 Degus have been seized / surrendered in London today, 180 are in desperate need of homes ASAP. Many have unfortunately been put to sleep as health wise beyond help.
Is anyone able to help us to save some from the awful alternative they will have to face it safe places can’t be secured to help them.
Do you have a spare cage or room for a cage or two so we can help save as many as we can.
The deadline is Friday!!! We have offered to take on the most poorly ones so will also need to fundraise urgently too to fund the vet bills once here.
RSPCA have offered to deliver these rescued Degus anywhere in the UK to appropriate homes and rescues.
Thank you
The Degu Den Rescue Kent.
Please be patient as I will be driving back from Wales shortly so won’t be able to be contacted until this evening.

I have a spare cage, but I need help to put it together (adventura)
I may be able to foster a couple, or adopt if I can get them bonded with Dixie and Reggie. I'm in North Shields, Tyne and Wear.

I'm putting a link to this thread on twitter as I'm in contact with a few degu people on there.

Is anyone else horrified by the tone of this? I know there are issues with the RSPCA, but it's shocking to me that the main organisation in England for rescuing animals and with legal powers to prosecute others for cruelty have immediately killed 120 out of 300 degus and are now threatening to kill the others if homes aren't found within days? This smacks of a Gumtree advert not a threat from the national charity. And they've totally passed the buck for vet costs for many of the degus to a very small organisation when they have £millions themselves.

The rspca have always had a kill policy. It's why so many have reservations about giving them more power than they have.
Regardless of the tone though, I think we need to help as many as we can.

It's live on twitter via a couple of rescue centres I know, they're spreading the word as we speak.
Randomname is also retweeting it like crazy.

WOW!! I feel badly for the degus and for the humans that had them. I am giving the benefit of the doubt, and assuming that they (the humans) found themselves in that terrible repeat pregnancy cycle, probably due to miss-sexed animals, and quickly got overwhelmed. If that is so, they will be so sick at heart and so overwhelmed.
I SO truly hope those degus will all be successfully fostered and re-homed in excellent homes!

I read an update this morning that the remaining degus have all been temporarily housed in rescues or with fosterers.. Thank goodness! That must have been quite the operation to organise, well done the degu den.

That was quick work! I'm glad it had a happy ending.
I'm with DC regards RSPCA powers. They seem to go out of their way to help dogs, but a little furry who can live just as long?! Nope!

As far as I know there were no poorly or unhealthy degus. And none were put to sleep.

That's good to hear, Butters.
I think most/all larger rescue places that deal with multiple animal types tend to think anything smaller than a rabit is unimportant. So many have in depth adoption pages for other animals and nothing for small animals. I suppose it's not uncommon to get the same kind of attitude from vets too.

I think I would contact the Degu Den Rescue in Kent who seem to have coordinated the rescue to see if there are any degus being fostered and looking for permanent homes.
