We took Tails to the vet (along with the departed Ziq for cremation) and the vet says he is fine, theres no sign of infection, as far as she can see, in Tails. So he's ok

I'm sorry you lost your Ziq. It's hard when you do your very best to care for your pets and something like this happens.
Seems when a small animal takes ill, their health deteriorates so rapidly. Perhaps it's because we don't see any obvious symptoms. At first they just don't seem themselves. So you call the veterinarian and make an appointment. There are not many exotic pet vets here in W PA. A number of hours could pass before I could get my Degus to the vets for evaluation. My current small animal veterinarian has offered to take a look at my girls but he and the other vets in the practice are not at all familiar with Degus. I would start there because I have great trust in my vet.
Thank goodness Tails is fine showing no signs of infection. I imagine you three will be spending a lot of time together consoling one another. You have my sympathy and support.

Thanks ra Tails seems to be doing just fine, and having fun with some new toys, and things to carry about (he likes carrying things around his cage!)
