Is febreze plug in (the pet one) safe to use in a room with degus ?

Hmmm . . . I don't know . . . but tbh . . . I don't much like any kind of air freshener. I think of all those chemicals I'd be breathing in and just hate to use them for that reason. They always bug my lungs. I figure if they are bugging me, then the tiny little lungs of our pets will most assuredly be bothered as well.

Have you tried an air purifier instead? They’re very popular with rat owners (much smellier than degus!) We use febreeze spray in other rooms but not near the animals; if we have guests coming we might spray a small spritz onto the rug in the centre of the room and that’s it. The ideal option is none at all though.

I won't use any artificial scents around the degus. I can't stand air freshners anyway, they always catch the back of my throat.

It all depends what your concern is. I have an air purifier, they filter out fine particles from the air but I don't know how much smell they remove, I would think it depends on the type or source of the smell. They are great if you have allergies but they cost a fair bit to buy, run and keep up with filters.
I avoid air fresheners because they reduce air quality. How much they affect air quality depends on the VOC content of the paricular freshener, I couldn't find any info on the febreze one, although I did find a different febreze pet one that seemed fairly low risk. It also depends on the size of the room for the concentration of the chemicals.
If you are getting a smell from the degus then it is nearly always from pee soaked wood, so you could look at sanding or replacing those if that is an issue.
