Hi guys, i have three girls, and they live in a metal wire cage, that has some floor levels made from wood. I do thorough cleaning every week and spot cleaning every day. But they seem to be peeing in only one spot, which is that tiny wood floor level. It changed color to murky brown and is smelling terribly, any advice for neutralizing the smell?

Hi!
Unfortunately, the wood absorbs the pee, which is why it continues to smell. Most of us who have wooden flooring tend to seal it with something like linoleum, pet safe paint etc.
You could try scrubbing the surface with a bicarbonate paste, to see if it helps with the smell? Just don't forget to let it dry out!

Our cage has wood levels, and we put substrate in the corners to absorb the pee. I clean with white vinegar in water, and every couple months or so we sand down all the wood surfaces. The sanding is the only thing that get the deeper stains out.

Vinegar and sodium bicarb are worth a try but you might need to heavily sand or replace that area.
If they have certain areas they like to pee you could use tiles or trays or square saucers or something washable to cover the area that makes spot cleaning easy. Something like a quarry tile will be too heavy for them to move, so they are pretty good, or you can use adhesive velcro to stick down trays or saucers to stop them moving them out the way.

I was wondering if the smelly wood might have to be removed and replaced with new wood. If you chose to do that, I would recommend covering it with some peel and stick vinyl tiles that would protect the wood and make clean up much easier.

Erin11, I've never seen those. Very intriguing! You use them and they work well?
