Hi,
I am thinking about making an odometer to add to our Degus wheel as I would like to know how far they run in a day. Degus being Degus I can't put anything in the cage without them eating it or collecting it so it's going to be something outside the cage using infrared light to detect the wheel moving.
Has anyone attempted anything like this before?

Not on here, I don't think! That sounds like an awesome plan!! I'd love to learn how you will do it and what you discover in the process. Sounds fascinating!

Perhaps have a word with Tictac? I know their hedgehog bucket wheels have odos on them?

Thanks for your replies Deguconvert and Bouncy, I am blatantly stealing this idea from tic toc I have used their wheels for years but the wheels with the odometers on them are not only plastic (we all know Degus!) but the odometer is cabled, other Degus might be okay with these but ours of highly and brutally destructive with their investigations of anything new. I'll try and make up an Instructable once I get it working

Such a cool idea!
Could you possibly put a metal pipe around the cable? Maybe one of the bendy ones (I think they're called flexi pipes)?

Or a bit of shower hose

Oooh! I hadn't thought of using a pipe to protect a standard odometer, shower hose would work really well. I have already order infrared and hall effect sensors, might be slightly over engineering this

That's part of the fun though, right?
