I came home today to find Boo and Toby had completely buried the entire food bowl under the substrate, so random! They had literally cleared a massive area of the cage of substrate to do this, it was a huge mound over the bowl! When I dug it out, it was completely empty as well, even though I gave them three days worth only yesterday. They have emptied their food bowl deliberately on a couple of occasions before (to manipulate us into refilling it of course!) but I have never seen anything like this - any thoughts on what's going on, could they be worried or stressed? We were all away from the house last night too, and stayed away during the weekend, so not sure if this has something to do with it. I know degus are weird, but this was.. Very weird.

Could there have been a storm or something which made them want to 'go underground'?

There was really heavy rain yesterday, maybe this was it? Interesting!

I wonder if it is possible there could be an influence from you not being there triggering them to hoard? Possibly combined with time of year contributing to increased appetite and/or hoarding. Plus similar weather effect.

That would make sense too.. I wonder if it is also combined with our lack of attention towards them over the past few months... We are cleaning them out this weekend, lots of goodies are in order for them I think!
