I’ve read that both rosehips and hawthorn berries are suitable treats for degus. How do I prepare them for consumption? Can they be dried? Do I have to remove the seeds or chop the rosehips? Can they be fed fresh or dried? Ta xx

From what I recall, both are high in sugar so would have to be fed sparingly.

They can be fed fresh or dried . . . but as Savvy has said, they must be given sparingly. I used to give my lot rosehips, but I think I over did it and they grew to despise them. LOL!

They are high in sugar but also high in some nutrients like vitamin C so I fed them dried occasionally. I found haws much easier than rosehips becasue of the seeds and a whole rosehip being too much I think, and difficult to break up. There isn't actually much flesh on a haw as the stone is quite big. You can dry haws in airing cupboard or near radiator or start them off in a switched off low oven, they keep well after they are dried. Quite fun to feed especially if they eat the stone which makes amazing crunching noises.

Brilliant, thank you! I know they are treats, I’ve put a red food sticker on the bag. I might try processing the rosehips a bit - maybe cut them into quarters and try drying them that way. They end up so hard though, but I guess degus have teeth of steel lol
