Hello, I'm from Norfolk in the UK and I have two male Degus who are of an unknown age and have very original names (Fluffytail and Stubbytail) I adopted my boys from pets at home after they had failed to home them and one of them degloved his tail, so they couldn't sell them as they normally would. I have no idea how old they actually are, but I've had them for about 6 and 1/2 years. Pets at home gave me really bad advice on housing and looking after them. After lots of research I built them a huge custom built wooden cage. I'm always reading around the internet to make sure I'm doing the best by my boys. This is a picture of their home before they occupied it - there are hooks on the ceiling to hang toys and a hammock (which they love) and here's fluffytail saying hi!

How lovely to see what you built for them, and to meet Fluffytail!! That looks really nice!! Do you light it inside? How do you give them water, with dishes, or do you have a way to hang bottles?
Thank you for posting this, Xellie! I'll say again, Welcome to the forum! It is lovely to meet you!

I ask about the water because it is always a bit of a difficulty with wooden home builds it seems. Not impossible, but certainly an interesting challenge.

Lovely to meet you and Fluffytail! You've done a fab job with the cage, it looks very smart and I bet Fluffytail appreciates all your hard work

Thank you for the welcome!
I light it from the outside with an LED lamp - I wasn't confident enough in my wiring (or their ability to not chew said wiring) to light it on the inside. A for the water bottle, the front is actually a mesh, so it' similar to hanging it on a wire cage.
They seem to really enjoy it, they have three different nests they swap between and a tendency to run around very loudly at night.

I felt the same way . . . unsure about my ability to wire and keep the degus from chewing . . . so lighted from the outside as well. LOL!

Hi, nice to meet you. FAB cage, really love the look of it. I'm not surprised to hear about P@H - I think most of us ended up here because of their terrible advice! Glad to hear you've done a lot of research too, I hope you'll share anything interesting you find? We love to hear about new products or ways to make out furry friends happy. I think I spend most of my time away from cleaning animals investigating them too - always something new to learn. It's not 'cos I'm obsessed or anything..
