Hi all,
Can’t believe I’m actually doing this...
I’d like to try and find my girl Ava a new home but finding it hard to give her up. I live in Bristol in the UK. Ava is about 4/4.5 and I got her from an animal shelter 3.5 years ago. They weren’t sure of her age but said she was fairly young.
Some of you will already have seen my other post about losing her cagemate Sasha, from smoke inhalation, after a fire started in my flat while I was at work. It’s been a very hard couple of months since and we’re back in the flat now but Ava is lonely. She lost a lot of weight after the fire as wasn’t well at all and hasn’t managed to put it all back on yet. The vet hasn’t found a medical reason for this so I do think it may be because she’s sad.
I had decided a long time ago that I wouldn’t get anymore degus, I love them but I work long hours and I’m very tired in the evenings. They’ve always been let out for playtimes but it’s hard to keep a constant watch as they do like to destroy things and I live in a rented property. I want Ava to be happy and I know I’m not cutting it as a replacement for her friend at the moment! She’s being very vocal and she only seems to do this when she’s alone (I had her alone for a while when I first rescued her before introducing her to Sasha).
If I don’t find the right home for her I’ll keep loving her myself but I hope I can find her the best home where she can be with other degus. More than one would be great but not essential.
So basically what I’m looking for is -
A home that will provide her the best diet... at the moment she has hay of course, science selective nuggets, dried herbs and flowers and a seed mix from ratrations daily. I know people are more knowledgeable than me regarding diet
A large cage - she is currently in a smaller cage as haven’t been able to get the big cage back after the fire but don’t think it would be useable now anyway. The slightly smaller cage (still 2 tier) has allowed me to move her from room to room so she isn’t left alone when I’m in the flat and in a different room. She also has a heat lamp which she loves.
A home that has the space and time for her to have playtime every day - at the moment I take her cage in my room with me before bed so she can be let out and run around until it’s time to go to sleep. She’s currently zipping around the room while I’m typing this.
A home that is willing to pay for vet treatment and to find the best care possible. A lot of non exotic vets have no idea about degus and I’d want to make sure she had the best care if she ever got ill.
And someone who is willing to put the work into doing intros and who knows it may take some time and not to rush it.
I know I may not find the right person easily and that me being so picky might not help but just want the best for her! Please know that this is not because I don’t want her, I just want the best for her.
I’ll add some cute pics of her!
