You know . . . we are not strong advocates of any one way of feeding. Initially we did have food weighed out for degus each day, but degus are really good at not over eating, especially if food is never difficult to find. At this point, I would say there are a large number of members here that feed on demand . . . meaning we fill their dishes and when they are empty we fill them again. There are also many who sprinkle their food, forage, and seeds over the substrate so that they do a more normal behavior of searching, finding and eating. The sprinkle method works really very well for promoting natural degu behaviors, which we like . . . but you can't always tell if someone is off their food with this practice.

Do you know how old they are? Growing youngsters can actually eat more than adults, so it's probably best to offer plenty at least at first, this will also make them feel secure in their food supply and less likely to hoard stuff (although they likely will stash some food, I mean that just makes sense if you are a degu ) If you can hit upon a hay or even two that they like and get a decent supply of forage that you are happy with, then you can always feed that unlimited so you and they know there is always something to eat.
