I move again on Monday (third time in three years...). Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly and the goos settle in quickly. Pickett and Newt don't care for the extra activity in the house since I've been packing everything up!
I'm looking for a bit of advice on the move though--should I wait to put the goos in their carry cages until after the movers have arrived? I'd like to minimize their time out of their normal cages, but I also don't want to slow down the movers. I don't have a ton, but I do have quite a few pieces of furniture that need to be moved (including couch and bed that will be disassembled first) and it shouldn't take long to pop the goos in a carry cage and plastic wrap their normal cages for travel.
Thoughts?

WHOA!! That happened fast!! I had no idea you were moving again. Have you found somewhere you like better?

Much faster than I anticipated! I was actually hoping not to move again until I bought a place, but my current place is driving me a bit up the wall. I've known I was moving for about a month, but kept forgetting to update on here.
I hope it'll be better! My new landlords are my friends, which is kinda nice. They've already been 10x more responsive and helpful than my current landlords (3+ months with mice, 3.5 weeks before fixing my dryer...). Its about the same rent, even though my current place is 1 bed/1 bath (750 sq ft) and the new place is 2 bed/1 bath (~1000 square feet). It's also on the second (top floor) so hopefully slightly less noisy.
I've actually been pretty anxious about the whole thing since I know the issues I have at my current place, no idea what they'll be at the new place. But it should be better in at least several areas. One of which is that I'll be a 3 min walk from a small beach!

I think I would pop them into the carriers before the removal guys arrive. Not only will you be able to keep them away from the worst of the noise, you'll also keep them isolated from the strange smells and presences of people they don't know. My lot go into hiding whenever males turn up at my place, as well as loud females (aka mum).

Makes sense! I was kinda leaning that way too. Hah, yeah, my goos tend to be startled by anyone who doesn't sound like me (my dad in particular was alarming until they realized he came with bribes!).
I just realized that since the new place is only 10 min away, I could potentially pack them up, drive to the new place, and leave them there while the movers pack up my current apartment. They'd miss half of the noise, which would be good. But they'd be in a new location all alone. And I'm not 100% sure if I trust them in their carry cages. Thoughts?

I'm sorry you have to move so much more quickly than you wanted, but I'm so glad that you are so much more confident in your new landlords, and especially that they are people you know and trust!!
As for not being sure about leaving the boys in the carry cages, I think it sounds like a great way to reduce unavoidable stress to them . . . but what is it about the cages that gives you pause? Are they . . . chewable?

Thanks DC One of the cages is, which is not ideal. I guess it could put up the play pen around the cage, just in case? Part of me is also concerned since the new place doesn't have central air, only the window units I put in. But I was there for a few hours today and the window unit seemed to be functioning really well.

Just talked it through with my mom. I think I'm going to put them in their travel cages, leave those in the current bathroom with the fan on. That should cut the worst of the noise and foreign smells.
I think I'd be worrying about them the whole time if they were unsupervised in a new location.

They'd be building barriers, bagsing the best room for themselves, making alterations.......

I laughed, but deep in my heart I felt fear since I know they'd try that, hahaha! Especially since I've already moved the crock supply over there...

Ugh, so tired. But we made it to the new place! Goos got to hang out in a dark bedroom while the movers setup everything again, which was good.
I used Winic's suggestion from last time (wrap cages with all their bedding still in there) so they are settling in decently.
I may not have the energy to do playtime tonight, but that might actually be for the best. Give them a little bit to themselves.

A rest with them locked away is best. Letting them loose before you can work out any escape ploys would be disastrous!

I didn't realise you were moving so soon, I hope you settle in well and that there aren't any supplementary rodents in this place!

How has your first day there been going?

I also sincerely hope there are no supplementary rodents!
Well, I had to work today (should've taken the day off, but oh well), but everything was as I left it this morning! Degus seem to be settling in, but we'll see how play time goes this evening. I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the stuff I still have to unpack/organize, but that's just because I would have much preferred to get everything done yesterday.
On a super cool (to me) note, I have a fancy new window AC unit! Its in the living room with the goos and it has wifi! So I was able to check it throughout the day to make sure the goos were at a proper temp, haha.

I love WiFi a/c! Means I can turn it on 15mins before I get home and step into a cool room

They're so nice! Though I've had mine on all day for the goos, haha.
Well, not the right section, but since I'm writing about moving anyway, it was apparently pretty rough for the rescues. Tom lost weight he doesn't have to lose. And he was just starting to gain a bit too. Hopefully he is able to bounce back quickly, though he seems to have a ton of trouble gaining weight. He seems bright and happy as normal at least!

Poor dude! His life has usually resulted in move = new owner, and you're probably the best those guys have had. Once they've had a run and realise it's still you, he'll start stuffing his face again:)

Might it be worth letting them settle for a few days before you do playtime, just to reduce the amount of newness going on for the rescues? Totally depends how much they rely on it or look forward to it.
