The bottles work on the basis of a vacuum so, only when the ball is pushed up will the same volume of water be displaced. Just press your thumb against the ball. If drops come out, it's fine.
You can try a bowl of water, but you'll find you're cleaning it out several times a day as substrate, wee, poop, food, degus, and any other possible things end up in there too!

Yea been trying that and hardly anything is coming out and the degus have been at it for a soild 10 mins and I haven't seen much signs of any water coming out.

It sounds like you need a new/different water bottle, I’ve found a bowl of water is ok temporarily but it gets lots of poos and bedding/substrate in it.
It’s best to have a spare water bottle in the cage incase one stops working, it has happened to me several times, and the degus act exactly like you described - or they get agitated when they hear the chinchillas drinking out of theirs / vice versa.

We got a bowl of water. And also have 2 water bottles up.
One is kind of being odd and works sometimes. It's the living world one from pets at home.
But we will have to monitor it. Worrying about it now

If you can see bubbles going up the bottle and through the water when they drink, it's working.

As long as they have other water sources there is no need to worry I usually throw mine out as soon as they become problematic and I test mine (by tapping the nib) every few days anyway.

Have you been filling above the fill line on the bottle? If you fill too full, it's hard to break the vacuum.

emily mentioned once that she has a problem with the Living World glass bottles from PAH, and the reviews on them are poor, so I think there must be a manufacturing problem with some of them. Mine works OK but the lid is slightly different than my other glass bottle. As Bouncy suggests, you could try only filling half or 2/3 full because it must be harder to break the vacuum on a glass bottle than plastic.

Hmm I should try that. Thanks My living world ones didn’t work either (I didn’t notice for about two days!!) mine were off Amazon. My guys chew plastic ones (all of them 🙄). So my lot now have a mug each (4), heavy one that won’t tip. Water is changed morning and night. I try and position somewhere out the way where they won’t be kicking and making a mess.

Maybe you could make a sort of "water closet" that will keep the water out of the reach of all the tidbits that can get flipped in.

I got ceramic dog bowls but it's higher sides than normal.
But we wouldn't mind changing it if it got dirty will have to have a fiddle with the water bottle try a few things and see if I get it working.
Thanks for the help

Mine have the Kaytee glass bottles, which are a very similar design. Ironically, the only person who has any issue with them is my mum! Whilst I was away, she decided to remove the metal cover over the screw top, and kept making comments about how much the little ones were drinking. Didn't have the heart to tell her that removing the metal meant the cap was so loose, all the water was just draining away overnight.

I’d love to use these but the space they have in terms of height in my viv combined with the length of the nozzle on those glass ones means they’d have to lie on their backs to take a drink lol

Yeah the nozzles are a very generous length. We went for the large size, which to be honest are a bit unnecessary, medium would be fine. Bella & Harmione decided to set about destroying yet another plastic bottle (they've destroyed 5 of the darn things) so they were due a change to something more heavy duty. There is no way they will be able to do any damage to these, even the fixture to the cage is a solid metal spring & clasp instead of wire
