So finally got lighting on the boys cage I know waayy overdue!!
My question is what sort times should they have it? I've been turning it on when I get up and turning it off about 9pm then it occurred to me that's human time. Should it be around the same time as the sun rise and set? Or when they get up and go to bed? I'm going to get a timer so I can set it to what benefits them most.

My lights are on a timer, they come on at 8am and go off at 10pm. Usually though we turn them on manually before 8am whenever we come downstairs. They are on the same times as us I find in terms of getting up and going to bed. Now I have a baby, sometimes I go downstairs to feed her at like 3am - the degus don't wake up despite me sitting down there, they'll poke their heads out, see it's just me and Emily and go back to sleep.

Mine are also on a timer. They come on about 9am, and off at 10pm. At the moment, I'm also turning the kitchen lights (where they live) on when it goes dark in the afternoon.

I think I gradually increased the time it was on at first, so started off with a couple of hours and worked up to all day. I think it may take a little while for their eyes to get used to the UV.

I've a question sorry if I'm hijacking the topic.
But is it important degus have lightning?
Do they prefer that rather than normal light rooms?

Natural light is normally best, but unless I'm mistaken this thread is actually about a UV light, even though it doesn't say so (it had been discussed in another thread previously). UV light is important for degus on high percentage natural diets so that the degus can make their own vitamin D through the UV light, vit D is not/barely available in food unless artificially supplemented. We also recommend UV lights for degus with dental issues.

I've a question sorry if I'm hijacking the topic. But is it important degus have lightning? Do they prefer that rather than normal light rooms? I have lighting installed in the bottom levels of my cage as they do not have any natural light and the room lighting was insufficient. They love sunlight, unfortunately I can't put them where they would have access to this. I find by controlling the lighting with timers they maintain the same body clock as us - there have been times when we forgot to turn the lights off and then come home at 3am to find the degus still wide awake and active, with no concept that it is the middle of the night due to living in artificial light. So you can see people use lighting for both health and environmental reasons.

My lot live in a north-facing room that is deep. Because of this, it's often a bit murky. Both enclosures have a uv lamp (but 100% natural diet), and some sections have LED. I'm sure my lot wouldn't be bothered if I took the LEDs away, but I wouldn't get as many photo opportunities
